One idea I had was to take the wheels off my wife's gorilla cart and attach skis, but 1) that was warned against by the home manager and 2) I would like the center of gravity lower and maybe the full footprint on the ground for easier sliding.
I use Northern Sled Works built UMHW sleighs, they are spendy but have thousands of mile on them without issues.
Ok, I just saw the price. I don't think that will be on the budget. But those are the ones I'm thinking of! I love those.
Here's a decent SkiDoo forum posting with some ideas: What do you think is the best firewood hauling sleigh design? - Skandic / Expedition - DOOTalk Forums
Sinngetreu ... Delrin sheet isn't cheap, but it might be a good start for you to whip up your own design, for your application. I'd probably use 3/8". Incredibly tough, and slippery (on snow), stuff.
There are many options both homemade and store bought. Whatever works , I have been through the gambit and the UMHW—-juice is worth the squeeze. I am confident it won’t wear out.
I hear ya barkin big dog, but I would say UHMW is probably a better fit. Delrin can be a bit brittle when a force is applied to it. Dragging it over a corn field with logs on it might be tough. You could do the same thing with a 1/4" sheet in UHMW and UHMW has a bit more give and is super slippery. It is really expensive though. One supplier I saw had 4' X 8' sheet for $435. I didn't shop around though. If I could have a free sheet of my choice, I would love to get some LubX. Its like UHMW but with a better coefficient of friction. But then again, your talkin $636.84 for the same sheet.
UMHW will definitely hold up. There's a reason it is the material used for slides on snowmobile rear suspension between the track and the skidframe for about 40 years.
This is a pretty good deal. Otter Outdoors Otter Pro Medium Sled Combo | Cabela's Its the medium size, but that will easily fit 32" long pieces
That's really what it is. Obviously you don't want to be throwing the logs into the sled, but rather set them in. Even so, they seen to hold up pretty well. Loaded up like I do with mine, I'm sure it's probably around 500+ lbs at a time. No issues, but I don't have the hyfax runners on mine like that kit has, and I was thinking of adding those to it.
That pic makes me think of a truck bed liner...got any of those around? Would probably work ok...some car dealers will give used ones away...they often take them out when a trade comes in with one in it. And I know Backwoods Savage is a dray fan...https://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/posts/1189514/like
