Was at Tough chitte Charlie's yesterday, needed a bottle of winter Powerservice (silver bittle) for the tractors and I inquired about the cost of pellets ( they have at least 30 skids out back of wrapped Michigan Hardwood Pellets (I checked). Sales associate told me $299 bucks per full skid in skid quantity. I think I'll get the diesel pickup truck out and go fetch a couple more at that price and put them on my TSC card at 6 months same as cash no interest. Only tome I use the highway robbery TSC card. Their interest rate is 28 percent, not playing that game, ever.

Like I said previously, I find it interesting that you folks in New England pay substantially more for wood pellets than we do here in the mid west and the nearest pellet extruder to us is about 100 miles away.

Ditto, so true. Or how Canadian pellet shipped in can be cheaper than those made in Vt or NH.

Think what I'm gonna do is park a full skid next to the shop and tarp them so I don't have to lug bags from the barn to the shop. I'll have them handy by the door all the time.

Started the stove a bit earlier today. it's chilly out (40) and windy and my wife was getting crabby about the temperature in the house so I made her (and the cats) happy.

Didn't think 62 was all that chilly, bur she did.. 71 now. Trying to be frugal with fuel this year, besides, I don't like cleaning it out too often.

Wood pellet pricing are rising. For southern NH, www.woodpellets.com has:
    Cleanfire Hardwood for $375/ton
    Cleanfire Douglas Fir for $520/ton

Yes, noticed another $5 per ton increase across most brands this week. Averge price will be $400 a ton once we get into December or January way things are going.

All I can say is ouch... Still holding here at $299 a ton. Wish gas and diesel were holding, they are not.

I have to ask why Douglas Fir pellets are so much more than mixed hardwood? I'd think hardwood pellets would be better, much like burning chunk hardwood versus softwood.

On average, the softwood pellets produce less azz and more BTU's than hardwood pellets. Douglas Fir is the holy grail of pellets, and was the wood originally used for the first pellets. But it's limited supply and only located in pacific northwest, so it's a premium price and expensive to ship.

The pellet stove, with its forced air system and burn pot, can burn softwood hotter and cleaner than a regular stove, with negligible creosote buildup.

Corn is even better, least for me. I get nothing but a little fly ash and if I really want it to rock and roll, I'll mix in a little oilseed. Didn't know the difference between softwood and hardwood pellets. Thanks. Kind of nippy here. Been real warm this last week, stove has been off but not now. 31 tonight.

I rarely look at their prices since they won't deliver to me.I'm about 28 miles from them. I have always been shocked that they are supposedly delivering everywhere, but not to my zip code.

Oh wait, this time they say they will deliver - 1st time ever. But, I'm happy with what I have, the prices I paid, and the garage is too full to take more anyway.

I went to buy pellets at our local Wallyworld HD this week: “We are currently sold out and have no idea when we are getting more”. Uh oh. Thankfully, Lowe’s across the way had three tons for me.

Nothing in life is free. I'm sure the delivery cost is built into the price of the product.

This will be heard many times real soon across new england. It's even scarier hearing about the incredibly low diesel #2 heating oil situation on the east coast. We're 1/3 of normal inventory, and only a 25 day supply country wide.

I haven't seen pellets at Wally World that I normally go to (Concord) for years. Friday I was at the one in Amherst and happened to see they had an open pallet in the gardening section (which is currently mostly the Holiday section). Didn't look to see what they were but did see a sign that said they were about $6.50/bag.

Actually this adds little value to the conversation since I have no idea how much they had in stock.

Seriously. Many of us here are fortunate to have a backup plan for oil. I’m sure that’s going to continue to creep up in cost as the temps drop.

Actually, it does in a way... I tend to steer clear of partial open skids of pellets for a couple reasons. One, the more they are handled, the dustier they get and two, if sitting somewhere outside, they get mushy and we all know how that plays.

Then there is the local Farm and Fleet selling 40 pound sacks of cherry pits for $6.50 a sack. Those will be there a long time as cherry pits are poor stove fuel, though pretty much a Michigan thing. Cherry pits burn fast and make a lot of ash and no, they don't smell like cherries burning.

I do have to hand it to Wally World - their open pallet was under an overhead cover, so they weren't going to get wet. I believe that the BBS relatively near me do the same thing.
