Should we make a concerted effort to NOT buy from China?

In answer to the question - yes, I think we should.

I try whenever possible but it's not easy; there are lots companies that used to manufacture in the UK but no longer do - Dyson vacuum cleaners and Hotpoint washing machines spring to mind. I think it is misleading when companies advertise themselves as 'British' or mention 'British engineering' etc. but don't actually manufacture anything here. There is a popular clothes brand over here with the slogan, 'fabulously British' but upon closer inspection, nearly everything they sell is made in China or India.

The biggest problem with buying Chinese stuff is they don't compete on an EVEN PLAYING FIELD. Made by slave labor /sweat shops and not to mention a lot of aftermarket stuff is stolen patents for the most part......

And if it comes out this virus was an intentional occurance, there needs to be some really harsh penalties handed to them!

I can say this, my nephew is an engineer. He works for a small company in New Hampshire. Spent more time in China than home for 3 years. They have the patent on building the crystals that make up solar panels of a certain type ( beyond me what he’s talking about). They build the machines and sold them to a company in China to produce these crystals. High temps, high pressure, spins at a really high speed and some other stuff. My question is if you own the market on these crystals why would you sell machines overseas and teach them how to operate them just to make competition for yourself?

It use to be "made in Taiwan" that you used to see all the time...then when Walmart came to town, in the 80's I would guess, I started to notice more and more "made in China" stuff there...

Wal Mart & Amazon are two biggest outlets for Chinese stuff. I don't buy from Wal Mart at all & only non Chinese from Amazon. My tools are Snap On & they are USA made & worth the money.

I'm really interested in this. Like too many we are talking about, kiddo has too many toys, much of which were orig for younger kids. I've tried many times and thinned what I could, but she takes parts of toddler games and uses them at her current age which happens to be playing out games with barbies. SMH.

Where I have a hard time with is putting toys away, within minutes she has her lego tower thing with barbies playing on it while using props from toddler and little kid small parts of toys.

Saddest part is we gave her a science kit for Christmas that came with a blue face mask, and she wears it when she goes out of the house with Daddy (he pulls his fleece headband over his nose and mouth). Crazy times. That said our whole "town" is doing similar. With the college students on semi permanent spring break the rest of the year round population contains a large percent of elderly, everbody is being careful. Go Wyoming!

Read an article a few months ago that described trumps distaste for globalism and it laid out many of his goals and accomplishments away from it. Regionalism is what this article described as a new upcoming era. I can see it happening in the MCA agreement and how trump has been working with Mexico on a couple fronts . If Mexico could do what China has done on the industrial front why not help a neighbor who has no military intentions of taking over the world.

History repeats itself. Over and over.

Remembering back to when I was a child, there would be the old guys....(you know-adults) complaining of very much the same thing only it was directed against Japan. It was less than two decades since WWII.

Don't buy anything made in Japan; Japan manufactures nothing but junk; and even as far as it doesn't matter that they lost the war, they are taking over the world with all of their cheap manufacturing!

Same kind of comments we are hearing and making today.

Backwoods Savage will remember this time period and concerted effort quite well also. :handshake:

I think Sav said it well, basically we need to reduce consumption, and this will largely take care of itself.

In Cuba (NOT holding it up as a positive example, just saying), they still keep many 1950's vintage cars running. We think it is old at a decade, and the cars we have today are much better built, despite rumors to the contrary.

We consider it "normal" to upgrade our phone regularly, when the older one still works.

We buy crap (fromwhatever source/country) rather than good stuff (from whatever source/country) that will last.

Yes, I remember when Japanese stuff was crap, then they were going to beat us, then they fades. Right now we are are in the China stuff is crap -> they are going to beat us transition.

Reduce consumption, buy used when you can, buy quality that will last. The rest will work out.

You are right Dave. In fact I just answered another post telling about the Japan thing. Not only were they taking over all the manufacturing, but it is amazing at that time how much real estate they were buying here in America. History does indeed repeat.

That's still going on...foreign companies and individuals are buying up property and businesses as fast as ever...I was shocked to hear how much farm land has been bought up!
