Flushed and bleached and flushed some more and the smell is completely gone. Used a 1.75L of bleach in 3 parts mixed with a gal of water each time. The nasty black stuff ran about 10min and after than about 1-2hrs of rust water. Next day clean and clear and hasnt tasted better!!
I think how and whether it is a good idea to shock/disinfect a well is really dependent on the well and the water, and better left to true professionals. I have immense water problems from a 180' drilled well. I fought it for years by myself and with less than competent help from "professionals". I'm not sure about other states, but here, you need ZERO specialized training or degrees to legally consult with homeowners about their water issues, it is very much a buyer beware field, and full of scam artists and fly-by-nighters who think they know what they are doing because they can Google and read. It is very scary if you think about it, the water that they are messing with is the basis for you and your families life and health. If you have a private water source and are having problems, do some research and get some help from a true professional. Off my soapbox/rant.
Well said, Dave. Where I live the homeowner who doesn't rely on municipal water is responsible for the health of his own well. Though well drillers must be licensed, testing, sanitation and other care is up to the well owner, and that means monitoring for pesticides and other poisons. A complete analysis can be had (for big $$$) from a local lab, and depending on the the type of contamination, the homeowner is given directions on how the water is treated. He or she may opt for a professional, but routine disinfection can be done at home; the important watch word is FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS GIVEN. And by all means, even if the water tastes wonderful afterwards, do a follow-up test!
