Shag nuts?

    Ive never had hickory nut, always wondered if anyone ate them. Can you eat all species of hickory nut, or does it have to be shag?

    We have lots of hickory.around here, but you dont see many shagbarks. Mostly mockernut, pignut and butternut i think. I should know the difference from forestey school but never really mattered.after i got out. Never really single any type out around here, except i do take notice when i see the occasional shag...

    I honestly don't know. My experience with this is limited. Couldn't hurt to try a couple one way and a couple the other.

    Shagbark are the only ones we ever cracked and ate. There's probably a reason the others are called bitter and pig. I've never been around butternut or mockernut that I know of.

    Mom's Hickory nut pie was the same recipe as Pecan pie. Similar but different flavor.
