I do, i honestly do it because i enjoy it. Not a money maker for me and enjoy the work. I will say I HATE when I deliver and stack and a well abled guy watches and does not so much as move one stick. Those are my one hit wonder customers that I don’t bother with anymore.
Almost never deliver unless special circumstances and long time customer. People can drive right up to the stacks, they hold the tape measure and I'll mark off the amount with a can of paint or logging crayon and I'll help them load. You can't charge enough to make it worth while.
Interesting seeing how wood is sold over the water. I used to buy a lot of my wood and I still do on the odd occasion. The chap I use includes stacking in his price but most folk around here have a wood rack or shed. He is slightly more expensive than others but the wood is always dry.
That's more like it... $20 fee for stacking a half cord. Upon revisiting this thread just now, that is exactly what I was thinking... that $40 to stack a cord is a good deal. And I was thinking that since we're not questionable integrity dopeheads (right?), and know how NOT to tear up their yard, and stack it well, it's worth $40! Stacking is not a pleasurable thing for most of us.
I treat delivery and stacking almost like a second business. I very rarely deliver outside of 10 mins away. Ill stack 1/2 cords for $25 if its no walking and rack is rt there. Now that i have the 2500 Hemi gas sucker delivery is $25-50 outside my town.
I will outright tell folks if they want it cheaper, there is a dopehead/tweaker/etc down the road. The wood is rotten or green, 10” to 20” and you probably don’t want them on your property. I refuse to be low balled. I have only refused a few people who insisted on bartering even after that.
Yes sir. Charge 20 bucks a rick. I think of this as someone paying me to get some more exercise and making me healthier... rather than getting paid to do something I would rather not do lol.
The good news of the current US economy "changes" is that firewood sales will imho be through the roof next year. I predict anyone selling firewood this coming fall will get top dollar and sell out quickly. When oil and fuels go up, its only reasonable that firewood goes up as well, including stacking fees. Supply and demand.
Thats not a bad deal Brad, I charged $60 to stack a cord up on s deck. Drove the truck up to the steps and had to go up snd down 5 steps. 2 truckloads took 45 mins each
I think im charging more for non regulars next year. Its a PITA if they dont have a decent log rack either and i have to crib.
Are all your sales full cords? Most of mine are half as the profit margin is greater vs a full. Most customers are "casual" burners.
There is more money to be made per hour stacking than actually making firewood. Set your stacking prices above what you would pay and wait for them to say it's too much.
I wouldnt pay anything! , but i see your point. You're a good wood salesman Joe. With all the cords you produce, you better be!
Along with many of us in here, I wouldn't pay for stacking either. What you have to remember is there are a lot of people who like pretty flames but don't want to do ANY of the work involved. I'm sure, in certain parts of our country, there is a market for cleaning ashes out of people's fireplaces and getting the next fire ready to light.
