Hauled in a oak tree that has been cut since 1998 and laying along edge of field exposed to the sun and wind. Thought this might yield some good dry wood to stretch out dwindling supply. Also needed to get the 2260 autotune settled in. Wood was still testing over 30% moisture after all those years. We have been in a drought for past two years so drying conditions should have been ideal. Found a standing dead walnut at 18% so decided to add it to wood pile instead. Everyone needs a good wood dog. He had a good day keeping field mice population under control.
Nice looking wood! Trees that large and laying on the ground don't dry well.. Will be great in a year or so though.. Great pics!
Thanks for posting that because we get so many posts thinking that the wood is dry because the tree has been down so long. Not necessarily true. But oak will keep for an amazingly long time. A year ago we picked up a bunch of both white and red oak that was 10 years or more cut. The longest log was 4' and most were cut to 16" length and just laying on the ground and not in a place where they would get sunshine. Very wet but 95% of it was very good wood.
