any cams that rely on infrared to view at dark are not going to capture plates- causes the blooming which wipes out the picture same as head lights. need an extreme low light cam, one that only needs about 1 lux to pull that off. mounted not much more than 4' or lower. they can be had for apx 175 on up in a hard wired version. I have a mix of cams including game cams, maybe some of the new ones use lithium batteries ? for longer operational periods haven't looked at them for awhile now.

Hey, TD I've often thought about putting up a gate I have a perfect spot on a culvert. You aren't driving around it;) I called the company just to check on prices and they wanted like 12 Grand. Just curious what you were thinking.. I've got quarter mile drive people that just show up backup and leave:loco:

I put gates on my drives before I put up signs without cameras. Was having a lot of people knocking on my house door at 7am Sunday morning for a price quote. It got to the point where I'd get pizzed at them and slam the door saying call me Monday(which isn't good for business). Didn't slow them coming to door. Then I put up gates . Still didn't slow people down. They would park on road and walk to house.
Then I put up a sign saying no solicitors blah blah blah and a sign with a gun saying unless you can outrun a bullet blah blah.
Nothing stops idiots . They are idiots for a reason.
I have a website , advertise in all the local newspapers, sign out front of business, yellow pages and Facebook. My phone # in all adds. There's no phuqing reason to come to my house on Sunday morning for a quote! Hell I even answer the phone till 8pm during our busy season .
2 of the best things I've done is
    1. Public humiliation on Facebook. It sucks to have to do this but it works.
    2. Run people off on the end of a shotgun . I've had to do this several times because people wouldn't leave my property. Last summer the whole family and some visitors were sitting on the side patio late one eveningand a salesman pulled in and walked up to us with the whole sales pitch. I said I wasn't interested in whatever he had to sell asked if he read the sign at end of driveway . He said no so I explained what it said . He said ok but I'm here to tell you about XYZ. I said I'm not interested and asked if he noticed the 2 cameras pointing at him . No but I wanna talk about ,,,,, I got outta my chair , ( at this time I heard either my daughter or GF say "OH chit you had better leave")calmly walked just inside the door , grabbed the shotgun and walked back out to see him walking briskly towards car. There's been several other ordeals where Lead Remington has been a persuader. Once was with a daughters persistent boyfriend.
I'm not a big hunter or gun freak , I just want my property, privacy and down time respected
When word gets out locally that your signs mean business , then and only then will you be respected.

    This,,,, good advice.
I run the NiCads in my game cams. Long life . I let one go for a long time and it took 7000 pics before the batteries went dead. The NiCads are expensive but are rechargeable and there are usually good deals with a charger included on Amazon

I know exactly what you are talking about as we live on a dead end road too. It is amazing just how much traffic we get and there are only 2 homes on the road. But if you picture that we can come into our place from only 2 directions; N or E. But for 7 years we could not come in or go out to the north because of a bridge out so that left us with one way in and one way out. Very plainly marked for all to read that there is a bridge out ahead; you can not get through; locale traffic only. You still could barely believe all the traffic through those 7 years. Some are just curious for sure but when I see people on our dead end road, I have to wonder if they are trolling; looking for whatever they can steal.

As for cameras, some trail cameras could work nicely...if you can camoflage them so they don't get stolen. Some can send picture directly to the house. They do not have to necessarily cost much for batteries as they can last a long time, especially if you don't take videos. One way is to set the camera so it takes still pictures but does a burst, like taking 5 or 6 or more pictures one right after another. This takes less batteries than videos do and takes good pictures. Lithium batteries will last longer than regular batteries too, especially in the cold weather, which tends to run the batteries down quicker than in warm weather.

One very good place to buy trail cameras is Game & Trail Camera Reviews - Trail Cam Buying Guides-Trailcampro.com

You can call them too to ask questions and they are good. In addition, if you buy from them, the warranty period is doubled, which is good.

One thing about trail cams is that the night pictures can be tricky. For example, in early fall I can get much better pictures than I can after leaf drop. So putting 2 and 2 together, I figured the IR needs something to bounce off so I intentionally set the cameras so that part of another tree is ahead of the camera. This actually increases the light so you can see about 4 times the distance (or more) than you can without something to bounce the IR off. Hope that made sense.

Below is part of a picture from a trail cam. Sorry, it is from a video so the still shots taken from it are not as clear as if you had taken a still shot. But this gives an idea of a picture taken that has something to bounce off. Without that tree ahead, you'd probably have gotten only about 10-15 feet away from the camera. The tree is about 15 yards from the camera.

Here's an example video from today apparently they can't read ,Video from a Wyze Cam On the inside Against The window ,
I can identify Color make model of vehicle , I don't think I could read the license plate though , We don't have license place on the front of cars here .
That is a 12 second clip There is also A longer Video of the same thing on the SD card That records whenever there is motion and doesn't stop at 12 seconds .
I have been thinking about getting another sign.
This place makes good signs That won't fade out or fall apart, You can custom design your own sign too .That's what I did

Yeah, in the event of anything happening where you'd need to ID a vehicle, the actual plate number isn't really totally relevant. stolen cars are used for crimes all the time.

Well I won't argue that, hard to complain about security when they blow my house off the map entirely! :p

Lots of solid advice here, I'll have to check out the cameras and couple sites mentioned. As far as signage goes, it's hard to buy something that says, pizz off to everyone, but bring me your business haha. I'll have to check out the signage website. Thanks for posting the video as well HDRock how far is the road from your house? I've got roughly 75' between the garage and house with 2 driveways (there's a turn around between the 2) but looks like there's some good distance and real decent details captured on that cam.

I am not saying that this is what happened, this sounds a lot like when I was teaching my kids to drive. When they were first starting out, we would look for streets/roads like you described that have very little traffic. Sometimes we would just pull over to discuss certain situations, traffic laws, procedures etc. and I knew it looked suspicious, like we were casing a joint. A few times I rolled down the window or got out to let the people working in their yard/garage/driveway that were clearly keeping an eye on us (like I would do if it was my house), what we were doing.

I am not saying don't bother with a security camera, in fact i am looking for one for my place and will be following this thread closely but the situation you discribed above may have been more innocent.

I would agree that this is a possibility, but we get similar situations to often for my comfort. Like I said I have to much stuff that can certainly easily grow legs and walk right out the door, I've been lucky so far and being self employed and being here and gone at any random time, helps calm my mind. Unlike when I was working full time and had a set schedule.

HDRock , those wyse cams are just too good of a deal to pass up. I'll be getting at least 1 for inside my house. We've had stuff stolen over the years by dog sitters. We just didn't have video to prove it.

I heard that they are working on an outdoor weather proof one as well.
