Sets are a good pellet, box store price or not. But, they are not in the same class as LaCretes or Blazers IMHO.

Same here, No need for high test when regular unleaded carries me into the negative numbers. Only buy high test when its a deal or steal!!!!!

Sets are great when scored for a boxstore deal...... Nice heat but can be ashy(compared to softies) So, I don't think I'd pay $300 clams for them. Others in that $$$ range would get the nod!

If money were no object My stash would be filled with a DF pellet. But because I'm frugal(aka cheap). I have to add a dollar factor to pellets.

Sets are one of the best you can get at box store $$. So are AWF(hardwood or softies), Blazers(haven't seen em in my region since 2003), Greenways and maybe a few others too(PTL's). But nothing even comes close to the Bear Mountain DF. Literally can run 3-4 bags of them and get the same ash as 1 sets. Pretty much 2 bags of DF will equal 1 bag of La Crete's ash. Even cleaner than them blazers AFAIK. problem is they are pretty scarce and cost big $$, So they are often over looked by the frugal crowd!

With all due respect, the soda analogy is really not accurate.
Both Coke and Pepsi are the same price..
Your example is more like comparing Pepsi, to Great Value (house brand).
The question then becomes, are Okie DF (or any high dollar pellet, not just yours)
worth $50-$100 or more per ton than a high quality $299 pellet.

Don't get me wrong, it is always up to the consumer to spend whatever they want.
I never preach the "buy the cheapest".. or the "you're nuts to buy those" sermon.
I prefer Five Guys, to McDonalds, even though they are both burgers..
    But they aren't the same..

We buy what we like, which does not always equate to the best value..
As you say, and I see it here as well, some people are jumping all over the Douglas Fir
    stuff, without batting an eye...
    A different consumer demo.

    Dan

I like the ice cream comparison. DF is top shelf(maybe like Ben and Jerry's). GS's are like stop and shop house special.

I love it when the Ben and Jerry's are on sale!!

Not as scarce as they were 3 years ago...many many more dealers in NE stocking them...even a big one by you Jay....and yes they are a bit more, but are selling very well and have become the "go to" pellet for more people every month. So many sales are being made just on word of mouth alone....seems more and more people will pay so they don't have to mess cleaning their stoves as much, yet still want that high heat and clean window....but I admit they aren't for everyone....but be forwarned....burning these may cause you to never burn another brand of pellets ever again....

Just ask your dealer if they stock the purple bag with the funny name...he will know what you mean if he/she has them.....

Why mess with Doug's when you can get Bear Mountain or Golden Fire DF's. Should be available to you. Also HD has Blazers IIRC.

So far, I've burned 5 different brands of DF pellets. I like Packsaddle the best. I haven't seen a bag a Golden Fire around here and Bear Mountain is $60/ton more than Packsaddle. HD around here carried Heat'rs last year and Lowe's carried Presto-logs.

    And the name is?

I'm going to assume these are definitely the PTL softies?
