    Morning,

I thought I understood it, there is a range, scores, and percentile result.

I was mistakenly sent one of her classmates report. Same report but the classmates points range was different than my child's.

Does anyone know why? Yes, they both scored a "high" on one subject, but high on one students points range would be an average on the other students point range. KWIM?

Glad to know that I'm not missing something obvious. What happened to A B C D and F?

She is lucky, her school still has music and PE class. Her PE comments cracked me up, she needs to work on her overhand throw

Yes indeed. But perhaps that was too easy to give grades... I never ran into this sort of crap until I had went back to college several years ago. I'll never forget one class. We had to write so many computer programs and I just assumed it had to be done by all. Yet, after the class and after the exams, several of us were chatting in the cafeteria. I knew I aced the class but was surprised to find that most did the same. Yet I knew, but questioned them at the time. It seems I was the only one in the whole class that completed every program! Yet, others received the same grade as I did even though some had missed up to 5 programs. That hurt a bit, but I got over it. Stupid grading. I guess they performed good according to what the instructor thought they were capable of doing. That is bull, plain and simple.

It is like when my sons were in high school. My eldest was having a problem one time in algebra so I naturally thought I'd help. I showed him how to solve the problem. Of course, I was taught a bit differently than he was but wow, was he ever surprised at how easy it was doing things the way I showed him. Ha! He failed. It did not seem to matter that the problem was solved correctly. What counted with the teacher is how it was solved. It was solved in the wrong way. Huh? The right answer in ever homework problem (I helped on only one) yet they were all checked as wrong, because he used a different method of solving. Okay....

My thoughts exactly when I saw your attachment. I was one of those students who had all of those letters show up on a report card at one point or another.

Backwoods Savage You are missing the part of the current grading system being "NEW AND IMPROVED":hair::bug::doh: Maybe it is a continuation of "new math" that was out maybe 20 years ago or so.

Yes, we need new ways to educate considering the lack of advancement for mankind under the old ways. Remind the 'new folks'....We went to the Moon. The planners and designers used slide rules and 'old' math...to-put-men-on-the-Moon! Oh, we also tamed nuclear fission as well. No common core needed. I think common core is just a way to drag all students into mediocrity, from above and below.

For sure I'm missing out on a lot of these so-called new ideas. But methinks the "new math" started a lot longer than 20 years ago. I remember when my sons were trying to learn it back in the 70's; over 40 years ago. I couldn't see the sense in it then and can't now either.

For sure when trying to solve a mathematic problem, simple is the best. No need to complicate things. Shoot, it is as easy as the elementary thing of solving 3a = 9. New math says you divide both sides of the problem by 3. Old math says you simply move the 3 to the opposite side of the = sign and reverse the sign. That is, it is a multiplier but it changes into a divider. So the problem actually becomes a=3. Of course this is a simple problem but as the equations become more complicated, choosing the simple helps solve it both easier and quicker.

At least it worked for me. I remember falling in love with algebra when in high school and perhaps that is why I ended up at the top of the totem pole. I also was the first ever to ace the final in both algebra I and algebra II. Yes, I am proud of that one. Actually I was originally afraid of algebra and signed up for general math but they forced me to change; then I fell in love with it.

I made it through geometry ok, but algebra made my brain hurt. I'm math challenged (fine with basic arithmetics), but I've done OK without the advanced stuff. I still cringe when I see a bunch of equations. I ended up self diagnosing as a bit lysdexic. Did exceptional in all other areas, but math has always been my nemesis.

you are preaching to the choir. It seems like kids can't do any homework without a computer or smart phone.

Looks like a great way to make sure only they know whether they are performing as teachers or not.

I do not agree that every player on every kids sports team should get a trophy. Where is the incentive to be best team or for individuals to be the MVP?

My lil one has come home with both some good things and other things. For instance school has reinforced that pills are bad, she knows better than to touch my meds as well has seen me upchuck them once in while (not fun but a good deterrent). But the other week as WWW took the rounds out of his revolver for a trip to Colorado she over reacted that guns were "bad". Crazy, he's taken her on many hunting trips from big game to fowl to prairie dogs and she had fun right along beside him wearing her hearing protection. (thanks again for helping me choose @minnisotamarty). Idk, could be from the last mass shooting at a gun free zone.

We all know how trophy kids perform as adults. Just kinda blows my mind it's now in the public school grades. Granted I'm old enough to be the mother of most of the parents at her school, guess they don't know any different.

Backwoods Savage I'm just a year or two or three younger than your kids, interesting I was taught old school algebra, I like that subject too :) These days lil one comes home with homework, there are shapes, numbers, pictures, and the whole kitchen sink. She has to understand it 3 ways, math, reading (comprehension), and writing the answer. Very interesting.

Does anyone remember the screen name of a semi-recent new member that is also a school teacher? I wonder if he could shed some light on this?

Thanks :) I'd love some cliff notes on what I'm looking at if sees this and has time to explain it to me.

Well you smoked me out! I can only comment on NY state-our kids take a state required test annually. The score that is reported to parents is a scaled score between around 200-369 or so. It has no direct corelation to the student's performance-the results are "manipulated" state wide. We at school don't even get data about which questions the student misses-just group data.

The "important" numbers are 1-4-a 1 means the student is severely behind, a 2 means they are partially meeting the standards, a 3 is meeting the standards, and a 4 means there are exceeding the standards.

These scores mean nothing to a student's success-In Fact we prohibited by law to use those for student promotion/retention, and don't even receive them from the state until August, far too late for such use.

The scores mentioned in the original post seem to be growth scores-how much did the student grow from year to year. Our students don't get those but our teachers do. It doesn't make sense for them either. I have a strong Math department in my school. My 7 th teacher gets strong scores, but my 8th teacher gets poor scores-despite the fact that he gets 20% of my kids NYS high credit for taking 9th Math in 8th grade.

I'm not sure how much this relates to the OP, but if you are confused by all this-you are not alone. The whole process makes little sense to practical minded people.

Some of our neighboring districts have switched to 1-4 grades-as the state tests are. We have stuck with the traditional 0-100 grades for our curriculum.

If you get the feeling I think all of this is silly, I'll give you a grade of 100!!

    Thank you very much!

I did not intend to put you on the spot, but very much appreciate the explanation and you point of view :)

Sounds like it’s all answered so I’ll just ramble on for fundsies...
I do not teach, only a slimy maintenance guy. My wife is a teacher however and I like to try and understand what all goes on. In Nebraska, they (dept of ed) seems to like to change standards of testing every couple years. Just when we had a great system to celebrate academics, they pulled the Rug out and changed the process. MAPS, I believe, tests each student against themselves. So the questions keep getting harder and harder until they miss them. That way someone can decipher their ability. Not sure who, cause as was said above, the teachers nor students really get an honest report of data from the testing. They are switching to ACT testing for juniors, which may be good and may be bad. Time will tell. One thing is for sure, if it goes good they’ll quickly change it...
I feel bad for teachers and their students that miss out on fun learning because he State wants standard testing...
