I have a pyr pair. 'Sven' is just under two years old. This was cute when he was a 20 lb 10 week old puppy. Not so much now. He still thinks he is a lap dog. He is more of the svelt European build. Currently right about 80 pounds, probably will add another 15 as he fills out. Pyr 2.0 'Ollie' is 6 months old and already pushing 60 pounds. She is going to be a pork chop. More of the stocky Americanized build. We adopted her from a farm in the ozarks in June. Beautiful country down there, but man is it hot!
Thats great stuff dan Are they working dogs or "lap dogs"? Murphy was up to about 110lbs and Emma right now is about 120.
They are inside/outside dogs. We do have chickens and they help guard them. Pre-Pyr we had problems with everything from weasels to wolves to bears. With the dogs the larger preadators now stay away from our property. Still have to trap the weasels, raccoons, bobcats, lynx, fishers, pine martins, skunks, possums, etc... But rat traps under the coop get the weasels and a 220 conibear in the coop roof vent gets everyone else. If Sven is inside at dark he asks to go outside and then barks for an hour straight. If we don't let him out, he barks in the house. Guess it is his way of letting everyone know he is on the job. Godd thing we live in the country. Greats dogs and we have them very well socialized with people. Kids love them. Sven usually goes with me when I cut wood. Tie him out nearby but out of the way. He chills and keeps watch. One time a USFS ranger stopped by while I was sharpening a chain. Turns out he had swung by earlier when I was using the saw. He told me when he got out of the truck Sven got up and positioned himself between me and the ranger. No signs of aggression; just a calm, confident none-shall-pass posture. But the ranger figured he better come back later. Not working dogs in the traditional sense.
Sorry 77 Ya dan Pyrs are a very vocal breed and stubborn in their own way. Murphy and Emma were totally opposite as she is laid back but always on guard. He on the other hand was just 'off side' but a great buddy We always have a family of coyotes living out back in the swamp and she doesnt like that all that much.
