Yes Dogs are a part of a guys family. Their friendship and loyalty goes beyond what most human friends and family have to offer. Cooper will always love you Greg.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. I lost one of my Beagles in August but it still feels like it was only 2 weeks ago. He was only 8. Like many others have mentioned dogs become one of the family and in fact make the family better. RIP Cooper

    Greg -

Its a terrible thing to have to part with a buddy like that. I put my boy Clyde down after 13 1/2 years. Its been almost 5 years now, but threads like this bring that day back as if it were yesterday. 1st picture he was about 12. 2nd picture he was just a pup. I swore after I put him down I'd never do it again. Then about two years afterwards, I saw this poem somewhere...

Before humans die, they write their last Will & Testament, and give their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I'd ask....

To a poor and lonely stray I'd give:

    My happy home.
My bowl, cozy bed, soft pillows and all my toys.
The lap which I loved so much.
The hand that stroked my fur and the sweet voice which spoke my name.
I'd will to the sad scared shelter dog the place I had in my human's heart, of which there seemed no bounds.

So when I die please do not say, "I will never have a pet again, for the loss and pain is more than I can stand." Instead go find an unloved dog; one whose life has held no joy or hope and give MY place to him.

This is the only thing I can give...the love I left behind.

About three weeks later, I adopted Roscoe. My avatar is me and Roscoe napping on the couch in front of the fireplace last winter. I feel your pain. Don't give up on getting another buddy. You'll know when the time is right. If you can, adopt. For now, have a beer, remember the good times.

Many thanks for all the thoughts and memories from many of your own good friends you had to part with, or may have to soon. Today was sad as I cleaned up some of Coopers things. Two of his good friends that past before him came to mind. These pics are from a day when Cooper enjoyed a good friend day. In the snow, all dogs were well. Couple years later The yellow lab got diabetes, and despite multiple levels of insulin doses the vet had to tell his owners that she would not long survive and needed to be put to sleep. On that day in the morning the owners came with her, and my wife scrambled 18 eggs and mixed in sausage and fed the three of them an incredible dog breakfast. Then they ran in our field, and despite having lost most of her eyesight she kept up and had a great morning. Later that day she was put to sleep, and then their chocolate passed a few years after that. They eventually got another, and so this morning I took over Cooper’s food, and treats, and shampoo etc... and gave it to them to share with their dog. Cooper would have liked the idea. Man to these guys get in your heart

Losing a dog you have had time to really get to know and love is very hard to get over, i miss Loner and i lost him 6 years ago.
A puppy will start the healing process, i got a dog from people for pets and couldn't be happier.

I’m so sorry for your loss, brother.

I’ve shed more tears over dogs than people.

Hope you are able to get some rest.

Sorry for your loss. Its amazing the void a dog will leave in one's heart and life. Hard to get over...if one ever truly does.

Sorry for your loss. Cherish your memories, know Cooper loved his family and would never want any of you sad. Having another doesn’t replace him but allows you to cherish his spirit in a new friend and Cooper gets to visit his beloved family through new eyes.

It’s been eight years since I had to put my dog Sammy down. Still stings.

Sounds like Cooper was a great dog. Hope you recover quickly and get a new firewood buddy.
