Putting down a 2-3 inch stone over lay pad for my firewood area...Question.....Even though stone will be down, should I still use wood runners to set the firewood stacks on? I normally use 8 foot landscaping timbers...The wood is this area is for 2024/25...Thoughts???
How bad are the termites in that spot ? Some places in my yard a couple inches of stone would not be a deterrent at all. Even the runners would need to be painted with a copper salt wood preservative here if they weren't already. If it is a relatively high and dry spot fairly free of a current termite population (they can fly in in the Spring) and the risk of decay is low you might get away with just the stone.
If you are on good dry yellow sand it is okay to not use runners. However, very few have that advantage. If you got away with landscaping timbers before, that is what I'd continue to use. If you run out of them, just cut some small trees or saplings in the woods and stack on those.
I did not, but my entire stoned area is under cover. If you can get the low fines, kinda boney stuff, it will not hold moisture. Space is space!!!
I would! A simple 1x3 furring strip is even enough to elevate the wood. Of course higher gives better air flow. If you were piling a mound of splits before stacking then it would be okay directly on the gravel. I hate when i have a mound of splits and it sits for too long (usually through the Summer) and they get dirty/fungus etc. Stacking is the task im the least good at completing.
