Oh man, let me just tell ya', Upstatewoodcutter! Ok, not here. Did I mention to you my family has land in the Catskills?
No gonna have to wait till next weekend. No big hurry though. I was able to split the locust by hand. The maple and hackberry isn't worth the effort so I'll have to wait.
I'd like to get some locust in my stacks but the only one I've spotted in person is next to my parents house, planted by the family who built it back in the 1800's, it's a huge honey locust and I'd never dream of taking it down, but there's a chain embedded in it so someone tried and failed once already. I've been in that general area before, it's a nice place to live. A lot of good views too.
I've often wanted to move to our cabin up there... That general store was originally called "Huggs" then it changed hands and was called "Ma & Ott's" As a kid, it was a real special little stop when it was Hugg's- the family owned joint knew all of us by name- we would go upstate at least a half dozen times a year- they always greeted us warmly! Ma & Ott not so much.....
We got a lot of people up here from the catskills, especially bikers following 22 north for the views. I don't visit the ma and pa shop in town very often as I don't see eye to eye with them. The small towns are nice like that and where I live I'm isolated but not so much so that if I wanted to I could get a helping hand for the usual barter of a 6 pack or offer of a helping hand with firewood.
True dat....Coincidence this has come up because I went to one of my customers house yesterday. Went inside to visit. By his fireplace he had a "scraggly" piece he got from me; and, on the other side he had a "burly" flat piece (2x8x12) that I cut with the saw. I said "What's up with that?". He liked the way they looked so he was displaying them for awhile. They were rather unique looking IMO; not a typical split for sure, especially the scraggly piece. As for more expensive goes, if I start splitting the knotty stuff and end up with a lot of chunks, I can't sell the chunks. I can't make money if I can't sell. I am probably not making any money by noodling them anyway though, when it comes right down to it. I already have a large stack of them is the problem. Yes they will burn and burn nicely. I use them for camping, church get togethers, give away to friends, etc. I haven't found anybody that wants to pay for them,,,,not yet.
