The only wood I'll noodle is where the grain goes all over the place at a crotch. I can't hand split through it.
Ya the guy came and looked at it today. Hes not getting the excavator for two more weeks, i can take alot more in two weeks. Gotta still be 40-50 good trees. I was splitting some last night and this evening
I like splitting the big ones with wedges. Iv done it before, i guess im just extending the life of my chain by not noodling.
thats great news! Do you have to remove from the property what you fell or can it be left on the site as long as its out of his way? I dont mind sledge and wedge as long as the round comes apart easily after a few whacks. If its too gnarly/knotty and/or twisty grain, then ill noodle. Guess ive grown fond of "pretty" splits. Dont mind working hard, just dont like killing myself doing it. Good amount of the hickory i got today will be noodled

You're better off. You would have hit metal with your saw. And not to throw shade on your handsplitting abilities, but a twisty old yard maple like that would not have been easy to get apart that way. You are so much better off with the straight young trunks from the quarry.
You are correct, it would of been a beast to split rounds of any size. Im looking forward to cutting today, i havnt been there in a few days. I did get a bunch of splitting done. I gotta find a new spot for splitting real soon, my little fort is getting full real quick.
