Plus the 6.2% that the employer matches.

MM, It really is a shame that our great country finds itself in the mess it's in. My 2 children are 33 & 35 and I worry about all of the things you've said, as they do. (I've been sitting here writing a way too long reply to your post… changed it twice… then zapped it. But, I do get your frustrations tho… I really do)

I pray now more than at any time in my life… and, I never have been much of a religious guy.

Some good advice given, but I'd like to touch on something other than financial. Mainly, what are you going to do when you retire? I've found a lot of folks who put lots of thought and planning into the financial end and making sure they could go to restrants and occasional trips, visit family, etc. but, no planning on what they were going to do day by day.

Just think: how many times have you heard someone say, "I don't know what I'd do without my work." That is really sad because some day you won't have your work unless you die on the job. No interest in anything else? Two choices. Find something that interests you and get involved or simply continue to work. Then there are some who just want to retire so they don't have to do anything. This is just as sad because that just does not work at all as their health soon goes south.

So my advice is to consider things you've wanted to do during your lifetime, even if it was only a dream. What better time to live that dream? But you must make sure you have some good reason to get up in the morning, every morning and make yourself busy. Of course this also does not mean you have to be busy all the time. What happens when someone comes during the day when you are busy doing something. Will that ruin your day? Or will you be able to drop your tools or whatever you are doing and sit for a visit? Please give this a lot of thought because it has ruined a lot of good people when they did not give it thought.
