Red oak bonanza

This huge red oak fell over in our pasture over the weekend. The main trunk is pretty consistently 3' diameter, the the bases 5-6', and the crown was huge. There will be cords (plural) of firewood here. As we discussed in another thread, this tree was rotten in the core with only a couple inches of live wood on the outside and the crown was still leafing out. Red oaks are very sneaky like that. Unfortunately, it did hit the corner of the barn. Insurance claim already in process. Also, any wood turners here? there is a massive burl at the base.

The basal swell is a growth response to the decay. The tree was reinforcing its base trying to stay upright.

 

Looks like it could of been much worse than it is.

At first I didn't even see the kitty in the 3rd picture. Too busy looking at the tree.

 

Had two go down in last year due to butt rot. The wind sure helped them out though.

 

Dang, that base is a heck of a mess. Lots of good wood in the trunk though.
