Well, it seems I had the last name wrong as well. I'm calling it ash. This was sprouting out a log I did cut some. My stamina isn't up to par. It's been 2 days from when I got my 2nd vax shot Some big wood That's my 16in husky 445 I did shrink the footprint a bit, getting off the grass. Loaded what I could. 2 courses deep into the van. And unloaded back home.
As an example, here's a couple shots of some Norway maple I scrounged a couple weeks ago showing some dark heartwood coloring. The large rounds in the bottom pic are Norway maple and show the expansion of the dark coloring.
What a tricky one! I wasn't even thinking Ash myself, although now it's blatantly obvious. That heart wood definitely threw me for a loop. After closer inspection, you can see the galleries left behind by the EAB. Looks like it's just starting in your area unfortunately. Most of the Ash here are completely done now, no longer putting out any leaves.
Day 2 at the log pile. Cut some thicker logs this morning I wedge/sledged to get some halved. The x27 was then good quartering them with one strike. The work area Loaded some up before I ran out of energy. And the unload pile grows. My husky 435 did the heavy lifting today. I left a number of quartered logs and rounds bebind...for now. Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow and Friday. My buddy wants to help, so Saturday is scheduled for him and his F250.
Some nice firewood to be had. Any deadline to finish up? Hot weather coming in soon. Im not looking forward to it!
I wasn't told of a deadline, nor did I ask. It is out of the way and I managed to get it off the lawn. I won't cut in the heat or humidity. I'm hoping to move what's cut/split this Saturday morning. Then maybe reposition that one big log on top, in the center to get access to it, and a few smaller logs under it. I hope I can buck it with what I have. Time will tell. There's not much rot. Just a few pieces. Nice solid wood. Easy to split.
My friend and I got a PU full load of ash this morning. ....and the pile grows. We were able to jostle around some of the larger logs around, to be able to pull free some smaller logs underneath. There's now access to the remaining logs to cut them to length. I forgot to take a pic of the remaining logs. Given the weather this week of hazy, hot, and humid, I'm probably done there, for a couple of weeks.
Awesome score! And isn't it great processing firewood in 90+ degree weather with high humidity? (Insert sarcasm there...).
Not used to seeing wood in a PU in one of your posts Mike. Gave your SUV a break! Dont blame you with the upcoming weather conditions. Three thumbs up for your friend
He's a friend I've know. For over 40yrs. He's one of the "camping guys". It's good to have a friend with a PU. That load was probably 3 loads in my minivan. That and a 2nd pair of hands, made for an easier effort.
A half hour loading, 20mins unloading, and we were both dripping with sweat. (Ewwww). And it was still in the low 70's. Early mornings are the best time of day.
An old saying of mine "you find out who your friends are when you own a truck" Ive had lots of "friends" over the years as ive driven one for 35 years!
Same here yesterday. I started early when it was in the 70's and finished when it was around 90. It's the humidity that I hate more than anything. Luckily I had the luxury of cranking up the A/C in the tractor so was able to cool down between trips.
