Happy birthday to the master! Those are some great maples, ours don't grow that big here. I like to split it, like to burn it, it's nice firewood.
Oh oh I have an old story! My family lived in St Paul and didn’t have a 4x4, snow chains, winter tires, or front w drive. Dad went to work everyday in an old Chevy Impala with rusted out floorboards. If you pulled the floor mat away you could see the road. School only got canceled once in 83 after an 18” overnight snow. I was at school before finding out. We built snow caves, threw lawn darts straight up, shot bottle rockets and bb’s at each other, didn’t wear helmets, just send it was second nature, ate loads of green apples and we lived! Played outside until bedtime….
We played outside until the street lights came on they were the good days oh yea we also only had a house phone no cell phones back then
Well the ground has finally dried enough for me to get the splitter there. Started in yesterday. Been a long time since I used a splitter vertical. Ill harvest the other three trees once I have room in the shed. I don't like having rounds sit for too long in the warm weather. Split and get under cover fast my MO.
Well this is very embarrassing. I split the rest yesterday and Tuesday. Even had to go vertical again for the big rounds. I've been dragging my feet to say the least. It's been rain free for some time so it dried out very well to get in there as well as back the truck up to it. I was surprised the rounds were in as good as they were after 11 months on the ground. Bark stayed on most of it and very little fungi growth. Brought some next door to stack and will do the same today. I have to get the shed addition done then I can continue with the three other trees. Those will get processed right away. Hope it stays dry enough.
The current drought has really dried it up nice so I hacked my way in with the machete (I hate prickers) and took down the second of four trees. Cleaned up the top with the 241.13-14" DBH should yield a face cord. Two others to come down yet. Should be working on these in the next couple weeks as well as the shed addition in back there. Hoping these yield some decent splits for bundle wood.
Finished bucking the first tree and then felled the biggest...22"DBH. 25" bar on the 500i did the honors. Need more practice felling with the longer bars (something I seldom do) even though it landed right where I wanted. Some pretty spalting/ambrosia common on red maple. Have the top to tackle yet. I may nibble away this week. 241, 400, & 500 all "saw" action. Sorry for the bad pun...i couldn't resist.
Well I've got 90% of my left thumb, but it wasn't a saw accident. Ill let yooperdave tell ya the story. Thumb times he's a good story teller, right Dave?
