There’s just too much box elder consensus here for me to doubt. I’ve done some more research. Although the leaf shape is a match for Ash, these leaves are grouped in three, where as in ash they are 5 to 9 groupings. The bark is a bit of a wash, since it changes dramatically as they age.
So box elder it is. There was a free full-cord stack of fresh-cut 4 footers neatly piled for me, 3” dia to 10” dia. It’s now been split and stacked. It split nicely - important since I do it by hand. Anyway more for ‘20 - ‘21.

I hear ya. If it's easy, it'll burn

 

It will dry quickly, easily rest for next winter. The BTUs are pretty good for the short dry time.

 

Box Elder and Silver Maple are both good shoulder season woods...
