Had this since April 2013.Cleaned/repainted it,installed NOS recoil starter spring,air filter,massive outside hadstone falling spike,vintage 30" General .404 rollernose bar/new skip chain in May/June 2013.Couldnt ask to perform any better,monster compression always started on 3rd pull cold,1 pull warm whether it was 80 degrees or 10 degrees outside..Used it off & on roughing out slabs/blocks for future woodworking/lathe projects since then. And I found out that even 36" diameter White Oak is NOTHING for this beast.... One afternoon late January 2014 shut it off to take a break,it wouldn't start when I came back. No spark even,had no clue,turns out it was several things I found out later.Replaced the old points/condenser with a new electronic module,that didn't help.Rebuilt the carb with a new kit,still no change.Good used coil & that worked temporarily,then nothing.Even took it to trusted local shop I was very familiar with.They got no further than me with their diagnosis.Didnt want to go any further & end up charging me a lot,so they put it back together & didn't charge me a thing!! Finally last Wednesday after consulting Richard Dougan (Saw King) in Oregon,I packed the powerhead securely in a sturdy box & sent it to him via FedEx Thursday morning. It arrived on Wednesday afternoon,he called me early this morning already & its fixed,packed up ready to ship back to me. Even though I wont see it until probably Wed-Thurs of next week,I'm stoked that its now back to running like it used to!
I've seen a few of that guys videos and have always wondered why he pulls the start rope out before shutting off the saws? NOS on a chainsaw?!
Because most of the older saws no matter what size or brand had very high compression.It saves wear/tear on the starter I've actually seen some of the handles fly off when it jerks back as its shut off. NOS = New Old Stock parts or machinery
Yup that be mine. At least its now more of a "new saw" than a year ago. He told me over the phone this morning (and I knew that already having checked that myself in the last month or so) that "after pulling the muffler/looking at piston cylinder he was very impressed with how clean everything was inside,especially for a saw of that vintage being how much abused they generally were..." Obviously a previous owner (it sat in a barn for years the ebay seller told me a year ago) took good care of it,especially after it was "retired". Funny thing is,the Seller who I bought it from his town is less than 30 minutes from Sawking's shop. From what I've heard you could almost find one of these under every rock in that area.up until several years ago when they finally started getting scarce................
Its back...................... Arrived earlier today,sounds/performs better than ever! Had nothing really big right now to try it on,since I finally finished milling those 30"- 36" White Oak last month with the 2100CD.But did cut up a bunch of 8"-10" Black Cherry & Black Walnut tops/branches that needed done.Talk about overkill... Hadnt used this in 3 months since the problems with ignition system started - I forgot how loud this beast really is!! New electronic module that replaced the old points & condensor,good used coil to replace one that died,re did the grounding wire,rebuilt the Tillotson carburetor & now its better than it was when I first got it 13 months ago.
