I've mentioned this tree before but I thought I'd post some pics of it. I never took any pictures of the tree after I dropped it, cause I didn't want my mom to see them. This was the first large tree I ever dropped. It was an overgrown, multi trunk yardbird. One of the big trunks had already fallen, and was laying in the backyard when I bought the house. I wanted the rest of it out of there to make a clearing for some new trees of my own. I've never seen this specific danger covered in the book I have or elsewhere. I saved the big trunk for last. It had a pretty heavy lean, and there room in front of it, so I just notched it where it wanted to go. But this was through a piece of one of the other stumps. I tried to remove what I could of it, and just hoped for the best. When I completed the back cut and it started to fall, that little stump acted like a wedge, and split the 27" trunk in half. The larger piece broke free of the hinge, and sort of "barber chaired" a good 15-20 ft to the side. Luckily it stayed attached at the top (thank God for those crotches) and fell mostly where the rest of the tree did. Saved me a bunch of time splitting though!
Thats a crotchety looking stump! Got any pics of the tree itself before it came down? How much wood did you get out of it?
Never took any pictures of it on the ground - kicking myself now. The wood in my avatar pic is what's left of that tree. A bit shy of 2 cords. I burned the other fallen trunk last year. It was a silver maple.
Oh before it came down? I do kinda have one. You can see a piece of it here - it's the one leaning 45 to the left sort of in the middle of the pic. Can't see the main trunk though.
