I've lived in a few hardcore, heat with wood only, homes, but I picked "major player" for the house we are living in now. The reason is, when we bought the house we are living in we renovated it, and did some major upgrades, one of the upgrades we did was to get rid of the cheap electric wall heaters and install a full $12,000 heat pump HVAC system. Thing is, we also installed the wood stove and flue at the same time. We have no problems heating the whole house full with just the wood stove (and usually do), and have no shortage of free dry wood to burn,,,,,, but I'll be dammed if I'm not going to run that $12,000 heat pump once in a while, even if it's just to exercise the pump, and circulate the fluids.
As a side note, that $12,000 heat pump HVAC system has been somewhat useful to us as a very expensive air-conditioning system in the summer time. Our long term hope is that it will increase the resell value of the house when we decide to sell it.

We also have a newer high efficiency propane furnace. It has been turned off since OWB was installed. We have no problem getting neighbors or family to throw a chunk of wood in the stove when we are gone. Probably should fire up the propane furnace occasionally to make sure mice have not ate the wiring out of it!:)

How about a 'Hardcore Player' category. I burn my insert 24/7 throughout the winter but it isn't enough to get to all of the upstairs bedrooms, so the NG fired baseboard hot water runs all the time as needed. There isn't a category that fits burning all the time, yet it can't fully heat the entire house.

I burn 24/7 too. So I'm a major player... We still spacer around in bedrooms to help knock the chill out of it. One day with insulation & new windows that should take care of that. But I turn on the heater once a year for the last 4 years. This year it ran longer due to a vacation and stove replacement....that's why I got a back up. Just glad I got the new stove cause with out it, this year I'd have to have turned on the stove more. No way would the little stove have stayed ahead.
