    Used to use that technique on green spruce
    -10° & colder was the magic temp.

    Hydraulics now, I get several uglies, but they burn too.

    We too have had the DED since the 1950's. Still, we have elm, but they usually don't get very big before they die. My guess is about 20-24" diameter is about as big as they will get but most won't even get that big.
