There's too many people who figure they should grind their rakers down flush, including my next door neighbour.

He is better than my neighbor. During firewood season all I hear is rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... I just want to take that saw out of his hands, slap him silly, then file his saw for him.

I haven't noticed any chains grabbing, I will get my gauge out and see how I'm doing

This is a great thread, Stumper!

You're absolutely correct. I'd venture to say that the rakers are every bit as important as the chisels are.

Take just a hair too much off of them, the saw bogs down and gets "grabby". Not enough off of them, you'd swear the chain was dull......

I always take off just a tad more than recommended, if the saw has the power to pull the extra wood.....

There's also a post made a long time ago on AS by BobL titled something like " is the FOP a true progressive raker gauge ". Pretty long and involved thread, But worth the time . IMHO

I do the same, and don't mind if it's a little grabby off the starting line. She'll smooth out eventually.:D

Yes this^^^. To properly set depth gauge height it must be filed progressively in relation the the cutter height. Just setting them at .025" is fine when cutter is new but when its worn right back you may need double that for the same 'bite'. The 'angle of attack' should be around 6° from top of cutter to raker. Raker shape is also important.

    Found it.

Are FOP really progressive depth raker generators?
