Well today turned out to be a nice day despite the earlier predictions of the weather guessers. Good thing too cause I needed to burn off some calories after last night! We went to a Cinco de Mayo party last night and I had about 3 dinners and 6 desserts... Anyway this was 2 red pines that came down in the big wind storm and that I managed to haul out before it got so wet last month. Today I finished splitting it up and got it stacked - first 2 face cords of the year in the books.
I normally just stack in long rows as I am stacking split wood and log form. Stocking like Shawn did looks a lot better and I am sure the air flow is better.
Lucky you got a break from the rain!!!! I was in the woods about 5 minutes splitting up some beech by hand, and it started raining again. I rolled with it and filled the gator though. No pics, raining too much!!!! Good job on your work though!!!
Oh yeah, I've sawn up a bunch of it. These pines were actually planted by my grandfather when he was a teenager. My great grandparent had a peach orchard - "Pine Acres" and it was meant in part as a windbreak for that. These two trees were beetle kill and had more blue staining than I'd want for lumber. But we like it for firewood too - my house is pretty easy to heat. Most of the time I make it into dimensional lumber but I saved some choice stuff for wide boards. A lot of the crooked logs from the tops became decking for my firewood pallets. I made this little shelf to fit in a spot between a window in Amy's sewing room. The one I was copying was made by my grandfather.

I asked because I may have the opportunity to mill some trees (after I buy a mill ) on my parents land since back in the 60's (both gone now) My brother and I had the pleasure of killing some type of worms that infested those trees wnad would have killed them, so we were told, if they were left unattended back in the 60's also. The trees were anywhere from 3 to 5 feet tall then. Now, they're around 22-26 DBH with some larger and some smaller. If I was to buy a mill, there would be some type of agreement with the current owner of cost versus goods received payment.
I'm probably a little partial but I think the red pine in particular is some of the nicest stuff as far as pine goes in these parts. The branches tend to be further apart and smaller then white pine which means longer clear sections and smaller knots. They don't get as big as the whites though.
Come on over and I'll help to teach you! We do have some stacking to do. In fact, I did a little bit this morning. Did a little bit Saturday too as I'm working on that pile that the ladies split at the GTG.
Oh yeah and they certainly won't grow a long as a white pine does. Those can get pretty old. Good thing that the rain has stopped here. None in the forecast until Saturday. Hard freeze last night. Probably another one tonight.
