Hi Sawdog and sorry I've just now welcome you to the forum.

As for the cutting and felling, there are a few good books you can buy but even then, it is pretty darned difficult and many times extremely dangerous for someone to learn that way. For my dollar, it would pay well if anyone who wanted to learn could get with a pro or even if he could just watch for a few days. Pay close attention to what he is doing and try to figure out why. I did a lot of that when I was young and any time I could not figure something out, I'd make a point to quickly get an answer to the question. But even then, when someone begins to fell trees, it pays to have someone else there who has experience. Then, even if you are sure, ask!!!!

I quit giving advice on the Internet quite some time ago because I saw so many questions popping up and so many wrong answers given. I'd hate to give someone bad advice only to learn later that someone got hurt really bad. Therefore, I rarely say much about felling and sometimes I won't even give advice for bucking a tree.

If you really want to buy a good book on felling, one is "Professional Timber Falling. A Procedural Approach" by D. Douglas Dent. This can be a good book but like most books, they tend to be talking about the logging industry and most folks will not be cutting the kind of trees they will be cutting. Therefore, much of the advice given is good...to a point.

Remember too that if you are felling a tree in the middle of a woodlot versus felling in a yard or fence line, the trees will be a lot different and therefore, much of the book advice won't help much but experience will. Good luck.

Good job on it. Get you some bigger double taper wedges will help. K&h are good and Madsens house brand are ok but not double taper. I was disappointed with the red heads.

Saw dog where are you located at? Maybe you can find a member that can teach you hands on.

    Very nice Sean!

SawDog your best friend in the world is youtube! I have learned both how to and how not to take down trees by watching the tube.. There is nothing like seeing how it's done to make one understand the concept.

    Nice fell Swags!!!

Glad it went as planned and glad that 036 is doing its job! That thing runs REALLY good to just have a muffler mod done. Even MM will attest to that.

I'm in northern IL. Actually a good friend of mine runs a lumber mill, is a licensed timber buyer and logs a lot of the trees he buys himself. He would be a good source of info and a good teacher if I had the time to follow him to the woods a day or two. I tend to want to get some basic information in my head by reading first. I'm sort of a book worm, but also know that there is nothing like experience.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys - much appreciated!

Double lift has extra lift the last 2" if the wedge. Double taper is a brand name. Mostly the 10" and bigger wedges have them. I have some stihl 10" that has it just like the k&h.

I believe in aliens...... But it's kinda local heritage. (Check it out, Google: Pine Bush NY aliens/UFO/et). We have a UFO fest every year that shuts down Main Street. That reminds me..... Gotta go get some aluminum foil, I need a new hat..... :p
