Tim, newspaper and bark that falls off after a couple years in the stacks is about as easy as it gets... and it's plentiful. It's either that or put the paper in the recycle bins and the bark in the dump which seems counterproductive... I've got to do something with it so may as well put it in the furnace...
I am with System. This year I've started the wood stove much earlier than I ever have. Normally I'd use the forced hot air system to take the edge off the chill in the am as is thermostat regulated. As with the price of propane, oil is not much better. I need to fill my tank (usually 300-350 gallons) and the tank (usually 200) at my dad's old apartment. Call it 500 gallons at $2.75, I am looking at $1375. Most likely I will need to do 300 gallons, 200 in the main and 100 in the apartment. Hopefully prices will not skyrocket. Plus I am revisiting having mini-splits put in the main house to replace the forced hot air system. That would eliminate the inefficiencies of the forced hot air system as well as give us zones that we can program individually based on our usage. 3 of the zones would not be used when the wood stove is running full time reducing our electric bill, but still allow us to heat where it's needed. Without running a system intended to heat the whole house. With the benefit of cooling in the summer months at a lower cost than window units. Jason from RI
I failed to mention that as part of my plan to put in mini-splits, I would get rid of oil all together and bring in propane. Propane would be used for our cooking stove, hot water, grill and generators. That part of the plan would be phased in overtime. All will now depend on the cost of propane. Jason from RI
I don't think propane cost should be [too] big of a consideration when looking at cooking and back-up generator. Heat and water yes.
What are you talking about? The ADULTS ARE BACK IN CHARGE!! I mean that's what I was told after 1/20/21 Its like they're sanctioning this country.
We got gas piped here providing we install a gas furnace, which we did. We installed the wood stove a few months after the furnace (when the chimney was freed up from the oil burner). I don't think we ever got a baseline usage.....so no questions yet. I wonder if we had the wood stove in first, they mighta dealt differently. Curious what your answer was and their response was. (If that can be shared). Sca
Still glad we've learned here to get a little off the grid, less $$ to the oil/gas people is good. Even if prices were low. Sca
I like the propain for the grill and range top but it's a rather expensive way to make hot water. Why not a heat pump water heater ?
$850 current rebate to upgrade to heat pump water heater here right now. (Must upgrade from elec water heater)
