Wonder if the warpage & lack of good seal led to that extreme warping of the deck.

I hear ya on the move out of state and the reasons why. I have about 16 months left until I retire and my wife and I cannot get out of here fast enough. Life just south of Boston has just gotten so bad that it's forcing us to make decisions for the improved quality of life in the same direction, cowhampshire. I spend a lot of time in the summer up there and it's definitely a way of life I enjoy. Nobody blowing through red lights, it's not over populated, people wave and say hello, that kind of thing.

That's going to need cut out and a replacement plate welded in, I'd think. $$$! Very curious to see Woodstock's take on it. With some of the temps reported by beta testers, I doubt a few hot fires caused it - bad sheet of steel? WeldrDave if you see this, can you lend a professional opinion even though it's not a Fisher? :)

Kind of a self feeding death spiral. Just that one spot got very hot. Like when you torch cut a plate, the rest can be relatively cool.

That piece of metal got very hot!!! By looking at the area, there was a lot of heat concentrated in one particular area for some reason, maybe air flow. The angle iron is bent pretty good also. Without looking at the big picture and the whole stove, I would say over fired. Even a "bad" piece of metal can take 800º fairly easy depending on thickness. That looks to be at least 1/4". She got "HOT"!

Just thought I'd chime in. No, I do not expect Tom will have an Open House this year. For sure this winter they will be busy with some testing for the new epa crap. Also we'll no doubt see a new revised Fireview coming out next year. I'd like to see an open house to introduce that.

Will advise more when I get it back.

That is great news! Can't ask for a much better response than that.

Hands down! I have never seen any company take care of their customers as well as they do. My IS is 5 yrs old and I thought for sure this would be a local repair from my welder.

I'll let you all know how this turns out next week

There's some real nice little towns in the south western section of NH known as the Monadnock Region too with lot's of land and affordable pricing. Stay west of Interstate 93 and you'll find the property values to be much more reasonable than east of 93. On the eastern side is expensive in southern NH due to it's close proximity to the coast and Boston. As you get further north the Lakes Region, us also somewhat over priced.

Will check it out- thanks for the input. I am not looking to go north really, just looking to change the surrounding mindset; I find myself living in an area (where I was born and grew up BTW) that is changing farther and much faster in the wrong direction, from my point of view of course. ;) I think I would really like to move to 1975 America, socially speaking but I am afraid I cannot get there from here.

Sounds just like what's happening here in Nevada... Another mindset from the west is slowly creeping into my hometown/ whole state and changing it (no for the better IMO)....

The influx of people is much faster and is driving me nuts... I'm stuck though as retirement is too far off, and I'm too far in to start over somewhere else...

    :hair::(

Probably the wrong thread for this topic.

My IS Heats my home, I hope Woodstock comes to a good resolution for you. Amazing company as I dont think any other would take a 5 year old stove back to try and find out what happened and fix it.

Thanks for the kind thoughts! But it IS a plus that NH is a woodburner's haven, I already have friends and acquaintances there (through this forum) and look how close it is to Woodstock Soapstone. :D

But back on- topic, yes, it is yet another peg in the board that Woodstock is taking that stove back and offering to fix it well out of warranty. As always, a great company to do business with (or even chat with / visit) even when the reason is not pleasant, such as this case where there is a problem with the product. As always, excellent customer service, even beyond expectations a lot of the time.

Looks like you removed all the weight possible (excepting the top plate of course). I know from experience that in that condition the stove is merely fantastically heavy. When all the 'stuff' is put back into it, it gets fantastically heavy.... squared. :D As you show that stove is the same way I brought mine into the house, and that still took four full- sized adult males. Best of luck with the move and the fix.

I was able to get most everything that wasn’t welded out/off the stove.
As I was taking the stone out, it’s hard to see hairline cracks. 3 bottom row pieces came out in 2 pieces.
I’d say there was close to 150 lbs that was removable. Big help!

Agreed- a LOT of soapstone in and on (the sides) of these stoves.

I too have several cracked stones but we have an arrangement: they do not bother me and I in turn leave them alone :) . Seriously, the cracks do not have any impact on the stove as they are just hairline cracks and so still protect and insulate the stove steel firebox. It is a bit of a head- scratcher getting them all back in there though and I needed a diagram as well as learning the sequence. They are extremely well fitted to the firebox of the stove, again protecting all the steel from the heat of the fire.

I agree on the cracks while the stove is working, not a problem doing it’s job.
I will probably get 3 replacement pieces while I’m there.
    Does soapstone absorb moisture??

It is non-porous and stain-resistant hence useful as countertops and tile substitutes among many others.
