That's a very nice oak that you've got coming down. Good luck and remember X2 Eric VW - Great Gesture, ...
Thanks, but I'm on the eastern side north of Pontiac. Still hoping to "convince" the tree guys to cut the trunk; will let everyone know how that goes and of course follow up with pictures.
20" bars all I got Tell em lunch is on me and set the crew up with loaded pizzas and drinks for lunch , they will cut it up for ya
Hum.... Only a 40" diameter tree and has a Stihl 029. Yes, the bar is a little bit short but not that much. If it were me, I'd simply cut the thing! Also you mention noodling it. Why? I see no need to noodle such a nice block of wood when it should split easy enough. On the other hand, if you aren't comfortable cutting that 40" then you could simply purchase another bar and chain of 20" or 25" length and you'd be all set. Still, you can do it with a 18" bar on that saw. Remember, 40" is only down at the bottom. The rest of it is a piece of cake. Don't fall for the idea you have to have as big a bar as the diameter of the tree because you don't. Learn to use what you have.
That's ok SP! Being a part of the FHC drives me to be like any other like-natured member of FHC- helpful, in an instant.
That's a good point Dennis, if the tree crew takes off a couple rounds off the end that 18 inch bar should finish the rest of the tree no problem. I cut up these 25 inch oak out here with a 16 inch bar , piece of cake
I would go for a 20" bar and cut it myself, if they won't cut it for you. They probably will cut it though. I cut a 40" Maple two years ago with my 357xp wearing a 20' bar.
I think this is the best advice on this thread right here from Backwoods Savage just start cutting. Start with smaller stuff, the limbs. I have a Stihl Wood Boss 025 with a 16" bar, and I wouldn't hesitate to dive right in, I've cut much bigger. A sharp chain or two is a MUST. A bigger saw and bar are great, but remember you gotta dance with the girl you brought to the party. And that my friend is YOUR saw.
They are likely going to piece that top down anyway. It likely won't be exactly 16" pieces though. Just be a nice guy and they will cut it for you. When I cleared right of way for consumers we always pieced stuff up to firewood length for homeowners if they asked nice. So between 16-20" lengths. Some cold refreshments would go a long way I'm sure. You should be able to cut 95% of that with your own saw though. Push comes to shove put an ad on CL for free wood for the rest. Or let me know if you need a hand I'll bring out the 7910 and 28" b&c.
With that super split splitter you have you're going to be needing to do some sledging n wedging or noodling
