I think living in the stix it becomes second nature to be a moderate prepper. 45 minute drives to the nearest big shopping metropolis makes you stock up and plan ahead. As far as "pocklips" type prepping I would say I'm not one of those.
If they're coming to my house... they better not be empty handed. Unless they are women and children of coarse. Otherwise they will be bringing skills and the proper tools and supplies. wow. thats a lot of stuff. In a SHTF kind of situation we will do what we have to. Unfortunately most will not survive long.
"Preppers"? are you one? Thats really how i ended up on this site. I got the fireview used from my brother BrianK so i could heat the house if the power went off. It may not be the perfect answer but it will keep us warm... without blowers and augers My next prep will be a propane stove in the kitchen. Again, no power needed. I've looked into duel fuel stoves, but they are really pricey. my current electric stove will go in the basement.
The candles that run on batteries. I was skeptical at first but the ones that work well do have the candle mood. No flames to worry about and some even have timers. I won't recommend a brand because I have hit or miss luck with them. The poor batch was like mini strobe lights. The good ones have a soft flicker similar to candles. Regular candles can be so expensive.
A friend of mine got his from a church supply store. large, unscented and really cheap Ok...I was being dumb here
You know whats really weird , A Black Helicopter Just Flew Over! Seriously! That couldn't have been timed any better!
I didn't read the entire thread but when I read this post, this one closely relates to me. I dont have the reloading part down but I do hoard enough to keep me in the game. I can't quite get off the grid but my 'go to' location will be a location that a few close friends will locate to, and that's a plus when it comes to keeping up on a few numbers to keep safe.
Thanks guys. Now I understand. Don't know any LDS folks though. I guess we are not full fledged "preppers" but do sort of prepare for unusual things and also do a lot of thinking and some planning in case of economic disaster along with natural disaster. We do keep plenty of food on hand along with many other things and we could take care of ourselves for quite some time if need be. I do remember that before my wife's shoulder's went bad (mine too) she used to have a washing machine that was hand operated and a wringer too. I do remember selling it and some other things to some survivalist people and they were very happy with their purchase. They were mostly worried about the oil running out if I recall correctly.
Store bought and home canned food can have a shelf life that will last well past my life expectancy if stored properly. I wouldn't consider bocefus to be a prepper. I'm not too far off from that level of preparedness except that I don't have a reloader or bug out place, don't need them. I guess everyone's perception of a prepper is different. TV has portrayed them to be chicken little, the sky is falling types and when I look at their forums, it doesn't seem too far from the mark. I have a cistern under my garage that I converted into a root cellar that holds enough food and water to last quite a while. It's filled with enough food water and supplies to last probably 6 months if needed. Being prepared isn't something that I dwell on or think about all the time, as it seems preppers do. I can't remember the last time I bought something to put down there. Much of the food that we can gets used regularly, just grabbed a jar of corn for dinner tonight, but most of the stuff stays down there, just in case. 10 years ago, I would've thought it was silly to stockpile things away. 5 years ago, eh, maybe. Now, it's nothing but wise and costs just a few dollars here and there. One things for sure though if the shtf and I were to let anyone stay with us, which I doubt would happen, they'd better bring their own toilet paper because otherwise they'll be wiping their azz with tree leaves.
Nothing too out of line here. I try to keep a few 5 gallon gas cans full during summer storm season in case the power goes out. I've got a small handful of firearms, enough ammo to deal with what may need to be dealt with, compound bow and arrows if I need to go out back and find dinner and not use ammo. If poop hit the prop, my family could hold our own for several months before I'd begin to get concerned about supplies.
Double check on that. Our friend up in NY thought his new propane kitchen stove would run without electricity but it would not. He couldn't even turn on the gas and light it with a match without electricity. As far as being a prepper goes, I think about it sometimes...
Nope.....prepping isn't a hobby of mine. Reloading is and so is hunting. Therefore I keep reloading supplies and land available at all times. I'm guess I'm a prepper because I have a deer camp located on a creek and a reloading bench in my home? Thanks for judging. You probably wouldn't make it in my circle if shtf.
Truthfully I'm not sure that I am prepared for any end if the world chit...I would kill to save my family and friends, but I am not sure surviving the next apocalypse is something I really want.
