Speaking of strange............and that's all I've got to say on that Dennis schooled me a while back on our "Poplar" as opposed to Tulip Poplar. Some refer to ours as Quaking Aspen, or Big Tooth Aspen. Firewood by any other name is still................firewood.
Made a quick run to the store today and picked up an 18 pack of their beer of choice. 10ish bucks. I thought beer was more expensive than that. Or, is it and that isn't really beer? Let the wars begin..............
Well, we drink Busch in this household. Chazsbetterhalf has three sons who are always trying to get us to drink "real" beer. I did find it strange in Iowa, you can buy Busch Light in all manner of packaging, but regular Busch could only be purchased as 12 packs. To each his/her own.
So, I got a little surprise this morning. Just grabbed my 3rd cup of when I heard a heavy load coming down the road......slow. It was the tree guys with an even bigger load than the first one. They called it Boxelder. Looks a bit like Maple, but the bark is different, as are the leaves. One of the guys called it a weed. Here's a couple pics..........
They should/might be back with another load soon........Maple and maybe some Pine. Guess I need to get to work, but we went on a little vacay from the 23rd-30th, and I'm just getting back into the swing of things. Having new vinyl flooring put in the main part of the house and the patio slab placed soon too. Bizzy, bizzy.
Guy said they were "working right down the road"........I heard a saw again while outside, and all the trucks are literally "right down the road" again. Not sure if it's the same neighbors place or the one next door (they're only up here a few times/year). Doesn't matter much to me......the firewood's coming to the same place............my house!
Don't think boxelder grows around here in the NE, except for cultivated ones for sale at landscape nurseries but shoulder season wood is great to have especially dropped off for free only needing cutting to lkength, splitting, stacking and waiting.
Just got the last load a couple minutes ago. Some Red Maple, W. Pine, more Poplar (3-4 really punky), and a couple pieces of Spruce. Might be close to 3 cord total fall and spring SS wood. Guy told me this stuff is "ready to burn". Uh, nope.
So, I just went out with a tape and came up with 4.5 cord. Lots o' gaps, so I doubt it's that much.......maybe 3. That still prolly deserves a hearty "you suck" though.
Dennis I agree, and I wish we could put this one to rest already. Tulip trees are part of the magnolia family folks not the poplar family.nice score papadave !
So, while I was sittin' here cogitatin' on my daily activity list, what do I hear but a loud truck coming down the road......slow again. Different truck this time, but same guys with another load of logs. Man, this is gettin' easy. There's some Spruce, a little Red Maple, maybe 2 sticks of Red Pine, and some Birch........I may be forgetting something. So, the guy says (there were 3 of 'em this time)...."yeah, we were taking bets on how much of that last load you'd have bucked up". I had managed to cut some cookies for my wife and her friends for a crafty project they're working on, and maybe a couple more logs, but not much. After they left, I changed into my "work" clothes and got at it. Then, my wife called (she's downstate until next Tues.) and we ended up talking for a bit. I put a pizza in the oven and now that I'm done with dinner, I'm going back out. I got the Spruce that was first in line, now I'm gonna' start on the Birch. Never burned any Birch. Oh, and I even took a couple pics...............Some of you sharp eyed Eagles will notice the cookies next to the trash bin.
