I try to split horizontal as long as I can get the rounds on the beam. Vertical seems to be to slow and crouched all over and having to get up and down to move wood to the splitter is a pain for me.

Same here made my splitter then my back told me it did not like vertical at all, added a boom to hoist big rounds. Never vertical again!

I keep thinking about turning my I&O into a horz only machine and adding a lift. I've yet to decide if I'm ok with the wedge on the ram for a splitter like that or not. When I start thinking about changing it to a more conventional wedge on the beam design then just building it from scratch starts to make more sense.

Maybe it's because I'm still young but I can move a lot of wood through my vertical machine and not feel any worse than I would if I had processed it all horizontally (without a lift). I think this poll will reveal however that many of us are buying machines that were designed to perform vertically and running them in horizontal mode more often than not.

    Good idea Machria!

Mostly horizontal vs. vertical because my back is stronger than my knees. I have had the left knee replaced and am not able to kneel on it at all, as well as having a somewhat limited ROM. My right knee is heading quickly to needing replacement. Sitting on a round or milk crate puts me at a height that is very uncomfortable as I am 6'2" tall. That, plus the continuous getting up and down makes vertical unappealing to me.

I didn't have any problems with the wedge on ram on my horizontal only splitter. The downside is you can't have an adjustable four way or an end table.

I drew the line at modifying vs building new when I decided I wanted a faster pump/engine. It didn't make sense to spend the $$$ for a 16 gpm pump for the small gains. And by the time I upgraded the hoses to 3/4" for 28gpm that didn't make a any sense either.

The nice thing about modifying what you have is that if you decide to sell it you will get your money back. There are very few splitters with a log lift for sale used at a reasonable price.

Horizontal, that's how I was raised. If the rounds are really big I do switch to vertical.

    Right. ;)

The upside to wedge on ram is that you don't have to drag chunks back from the outfeed table when cracking the big 'uns.

With a 10 way wedge you wouldn't have to re split many pieces.

My splitter is awkward in the horizontal position.... its too low for me, then I have to straddle the wheel to reach the lever while holding the round.. the split half always falls to the ground. More bending to pick that up... Vertical works best for me.

I use a tractor mount 3-point horizontal. And I'm 6'7". So I usually raise it as high as I can and use some lockhart grippers to help lift the round up. For the big boys I can lower it all the way to the ground and roll the round onto the splitter. I build a ramp out of the splitter dribble. Vertical looks ungainly and painful..... Even if I got a milk crate!

I still prefer to split by hand with the right species. Love me some black cherry or red oak!

Although I still split mostly horizontal I like splitting vertical. I usually sit on a round and it's comfortable. I just thinks I'm faster splitting horizontal. And things are more in reach.

I stand along the side of the beam. There is a huge space to stand and work! no tires or axel... in way. I find most splitters I see in person, have the wheels dead smack in the way.
