Thanks. From our own FHC btu chart it still is a decent wood, just not as good as locust. Firewood BTU & Drying Chart | Firewood Hoarders Club Yes that tree is going to feel my wrath!
That looks like a lot of cutting. I hope you get another helping hand or two with that one. You'll have it all worked up and the bridge back in order in little time as long as the weather and other demands don't keep you away. Good luck and Merry Christmas!
Thanks. Weekend is pretty clear and the kids won't be around over Christmas so hopefully I can get it done soon. Little town so everyone pitches in to help, but with the holidays it might be just a couple of us. It will be good though. I can think about good memories of my dad while I work.
Should have said thanks for the compliments about the bridge guys. I think it really helped mom after dad passed to give something back to the little town they both grew up in. I took a short lunch so I could get a head start on some of the limbs. Not a lot done but I like to feel like I did something today. One of the city council members of the town (pop. 150) stopped by and said he would be down in the morning with his skid loader and trailer to help with the branches. Time to sharpen another chain.
Yep, Hackberry. Good wood, seasons rather fast, keep top covered and you'll be fine. Sorry to that, but at least you'll get to utilize it. So make best out of the worst. Glad to see that your bridge held up, as good as it did though.... Merry Christmas
Started working on the tree about 9:30...after some honey do items. Here is what it looked like when I got there. I spent most of the morning limbing and piling them up so they could be loaded up and taken to the tree dump. My bride stopped out and brought some lunch to me and snapped a picture of yours truly. I like it because it looks like I limbed my right arm instead of the tree limbs. I quit around 3:00 so I could get back and cook some goodies for church tomorrow. This is what it looked like when I left. This is what I drove home with. A decent start.
It is hard when things that holds memories go. The bridge can be repaired but the tree will be gone forever. Big hugs.
I wasn't able to get much done Sunday between church and delivering Christmas gifts to the neighbors. I was able to take to tall branches down with some help of a skid loader and cable. Dropped them away from the bridge so I wouldn't damage it any further. Lopped off and bucked more of the big branches while stacking all the smaller ones in a couple piles.
Looks like your getting down to the heart of the matter now. Careful with the rest of that trunk. I've had 'em like that before and they can do some strange things sometimes.
Butcher good point, it's braced now but I've been watching as I cut back to keep in mind what it would do once it's cut. papadave yes the rest should drop into the not so dry creek for me to fish out.
I temporarily stacked the rounds I brought back on some old 1x4s. They are actually cut to 16" to 17" but it looks like I'd been drinking when I stacked this.
