We had a rat at work, I tried peanut butter in a trap for several weeks with no luck. I tried marinated raw chicken and caught the rat the first night. They also have very bad eyesight so they tend to walk next to walls, that's a good place to put the trap.

Years ago I had rats in my Horse barn. I used Hawk Bait chunks that will kill in one feeding, because other baits take more than one feeding and the rats will stay away from them. Rat holes are about the size of a tennis ball around. Rats live in colonies , so killing one or two may not cure the problem right away. The smaller holes might be Short Tailed Shrews , they hunt and feed on mice. It takes time to get rid of them, but not a long time. :axe::rootintootin:

Thanks all, I'll have to try some sticky traps and marinated chicken, I really hope I don't have a house hippo, but of course if it's in the garage does that mean it's a garage hippo hybrid?

Try throwing a box or two of moth balls out into that area and soak a few rags with ammonia and lay them out on the floor.

I had a skunk try to move into my shed last year and did this. Skunk left and I haven't had a mouse, chipmunk, or any other critter in there since. There were plenty of critters before so I'm guessing they don't care for the smell either.

I like this approach Bret. Maybe if I put those down in the crawl, my chippy "visitors" would vacate. I highly dislike the idea that they're down there building themselves a nice little chippy subdivision.

I still see lots of chipmunks in the yard and in the wood piles but nothing in the shed. I used to see them in there all the time. The mice is another story. I don't see them or their droppings at all anymore.

I made one of these and have been using it for a few years now to catch mice. Definitely the best mouse trap I've ever used.
I call it the wheel of misfortune.

Big wood rats can be hard to catch in a conventional rat trap. They will peel themselves off glue traps as well
I've had great success with a mini have-a-hart trap. Let the dogs have fun with them in a wide open space;)

Well the dogs dug up 2 baby rats thus morning by the wood pile, so I have a feeling it is indeed rats I'm dealing with. I'll keep up with a little poison and glue traps and conventional traps something's gotta give sooner or later!

Apologize Larry, its a "Raticator". Tried to pull up a link for you via google but the storms here are affecting my satellite internet. Batteries were not cheap but we liked it's performance.

costly, well matter of opinion. I have had mice (or whatever it was) kill three car computers. Hundreds of dollars in damage. Any idea if these get chipmunks?

I ordered the $49 unit. I can hear those critters in my garage and that is where I have so much of my stuff boxed up. I think I'll set it next to the can of bird seed.
