I've been a lifelong musician, primarily playing the guitar for 30+ years. Over the past six months I've been teaching myself the fiddle, and I have a strong affinity for Appalachian tunes, especially the sad, lamenting, sorrowful ones that tell of lost love or a time gone by. Here's a rendition of "Piney Mountains" as performed by the incomparable Bruce Molsky. I thought it would be fitting to post it here as it's about a lumberman who has fallen on hard times. The man in the song is telling his woes to a friend who is sitting with him while they "drink and smoke". I'll admit this song rattles around in my head while I'm out at the wood pile splitting up some red oak.
