Actually it looks sticky but it's not sticky any more. I was rubbing the sap from those infamous spruce pockets as I found them and that made it super sticky but eventually it just dries up and just looks sticky now. Speaking of which I need to redo the tape job on the handle. I'm pacing myself. That's what happens when you get on the 3 year plan........which then gives you the option to split at your leisure instead of like a maniac. I even went as far as to whip out the handmade broom and sweep up the debris by hand. It was a good day. I'm in no rush. One hausen of softwoods will last me the entire winter. That score I have there's got to be enough wood for half a dozen more hausens full to the brim. I can only bring back 1/3 to 1/2 of a cord at a time in the Tacoma......taking my time and I'm on nobody's schedule but my own.
Went back to the pine score yesterday. The bark is becoming a real problem. I slipped twice while standing on the pile to get to the "easy" logs. Logs are about 8'-10' long. Can't move anything as the bark immediately peels off and all you're left with is a slimy, slippery, muddy mess. Glad I didn't get hurt. I told the guy I won't be coming back unless he can get the logs on the ground. Plus there was poison ivy growing around there so double whammy. Also one piece had some serious holes inside and when I banged it on the ground out came 3 dead scarab beetle pupas. Yuck, yuck, and triple yuck. Barf.
Yikes on the fall. Yeah fresh loose bark can be like banana peels underneath. Not my favorite things firewood to deal with. I was splitting maple with part punk the last couple days and lots of holes and worms galore.
Yeah man I need like snow spikes. I actually have a set in the truck that someone gave me and forgot about them until just now. That said it's still a bit risky especially if you fall in between logs and something moves. That would be a major problem I have no intention of wanting any part of.
