Starting to get a little claustrophobic in the Pallet Palace! (Thank you to my friend John from VT who dubbed it as such). Getting as much maple as I can stacked up in there. Each side holds just a smidge over a cord (135 cu ft), and I'll soon figure out some sort of holding contraption for kindling and uglies in the center. Call it 2.5 cords. Got the roof sheathing on two weeks ago and tarped it temporarily (thanks buzzsawbrad) until my old man comes through with some spare roofing material. I scored a ton of maple chunks from a guy down the road from me, and that's what's going in the shed because it's been sitting since last May, so it's much further along then all the red oak I've split. But I'll tell ya, I've been fighting for every single split from this super hard, knotty maple.
Red maple? It gets tougher the longer it sits. Takes two years to dry, too. Not my favorite to hand split. Sugar maple is so much easier.
I love it. Looks great rainking63 I first saw the pics and was wondering what you ended up using for the roof. What type of finished roof are you planning on? One other idea is checking the big box stores, lumberyard for any returned shingles. Usually the packaging is a bit tattered but shingles are still good. They stand out among the other good packages. Haggle and they will discount. I do that for a repair when i dont need all of the shingles. How much roofing do you need? I have some extra rolled roofing that may be enough.
