the hot stand the last 3-4 years...i been cutting up plenty of wood in this general area too. my stand from the ground about 125 yds or so away. the stand is in a tree that is on the edge of a little ridge. good setup.
btw i missed a opportunity on a doe that was about where I took the second pic in the above post. Kinda tough to see the actual stand, but its got an old felt shell. Anyway she gave me a very narrow window quartering away to nail the vitals and I had to shoot quick, because another hunter in our party was doing a little push for us. I'm 0 for 1 with my new to me .280 rem rig.
Took this doe doing a drive with my brother in law, nephews and my dad. First deer shot with my .280 I picked up this year. The 140 gr. fusion bullet didn't hold up very good. Blew up on a rib on impact, I was going for the heart/lung area like I usually do. No exit hole and no bullet left in the deer, just shrapnel pretty much. The doe dropped on the spot though, about 85-90 yards out so in that respect it did good. Gonna try 150 gr. nosler partitions next, I like to get a exit hole if possible, especially on shots like this.
Sitting in the woods right now. Haven't seen anything all morning. The wool pants are working great..
Got my cornfield spot all set up. I knocked down a bit of corn to open up a spot to be able to shoot. Blind is on the left in the corn close to the tractor.
Stayed on the ground today, had a light rain early morning leafs had a bit less crunch. My lawnchair view from the backside of the stacks Huge white oak dead - shot a couple unsuspecting does browsing around this tree a couple years ago A nice sized Walnut, may go after this in the spring Beetle killed long leaf pine - it's a monster as well First spot I stopped, nice hardwood draw Second spot, the ridge in the background of the above picture
Moved up the ridge as the wind picked up, longleafs are dropping their cones An old stand grown into this white oak, overlooks a huge hardwood ravine - I've sat hear many a times and never seen the first sign of deer, it would be an awesome shot
FWIW i'm gonna go with 140 gr nosler accubonds in this .280. I've had great luck with .30-06 fusion 165's, they shoot really tight groups in most rifles for any caliber and my .280 was no exception. The 140gr .280 fusion just didn't hold together...i'll go 150-160 gr partitions for elk. I've put the 140gr accubonds on paper and they shoot extremely tight groups in my .280 and they should stay together much better than the fusion.
I've had good results with the Accubond in my .300 WM. 2 elk and 1 buffalo. The buffalo was the really impressive one. Straight on @ 90 yrds, through the skull, down the spine and recovered in the backstrap. Still had about 100 grs. to it, textbook mushroom.
View from the stand I hung at my buddy's farm last week. No luck yet but the sign over there is unreal! Just waiting for one of em to slip up.
Dad sent me a pic of the 15pt walking by the shooting house at 455PM Dec 12 in daylight. Bro and dad has no buck tag. They already took a 8 and 9. Maybe next week.
first pic is to my right and behind me, second is to my front left. The low lying area is a bottle neck between a winter rye field and cut corn field. The narrow part of the creek has 4 trails dropping down into it and 1 going up the other side. It's only a matter of time
