Quick question about installing an OAK.....after reading through papadave thread (Englander NC30 deal .....ordered) I am considering putting one in. My stove is in the basement below grade. Can you put an OAK in above ground and run it to the stove below ground? I thought I would go through my drop ceiling but wasn't sure if this is okay? It looks like DexterDay has a similar setup.

You could do it...but since the OAK connection for the 30 is not sealed at all...I would want a cold air trap on it.
Many of us that have wood furnaces in the basement have to use a barometric damper to knock the draft back to a controllable range, and those baro's "use" a lot of CFMs, so since you don't want that much cold air to be pulled in through every crack in the house (if you even could) and the solution is an OAK of sorts. But since you can't hook it up direct, what most people do is to put a cold air "trap" in the line...the pipe runs down to the floor and then 180's back up...probably at least a couple feet, the more the better I'd say. Then back down to the stove...some people use dryer hose, some pipe...probably endless ways to do it.
Won't stop wind from blowing in, but it stops the cold air from just falling in for no reason.

Which I have one that Marvin can have...made if for my inlaws stove, but then the stove proved to be plenty big for their house anyways, I decided it was stupid to install something that makes even more heat! I made it so it can easily be installed/removed without taking the stovepipe off.

    24 hr update....

The stove has been in for about 24 hrs now. So far I love it. That being said I cant give a thorough review of how it works with my setup just yet. I haven't fully put it to the test yet but will pack her full tonight for the overnight burn :D

First impression....that firebox is huge! I really hope I can get it dialed in because I feel like this thing could really eat away at the wood pile. I swung in at lunch time to check on it. House was 70* outside was around 31*. I put a few small elm splits on the coal bed to get it through until I got home at 430. House was 71* when I got home outside 26*.

Just threw in a few small elm rounds (branch pieces 2-3") to hold until the overnight load. I have no doubt once I get it dialed in it will burn all day for me while I'm at work:thumbs:

Just got a call from my FIL, he said their 30 was "backfiring"...but they never had issue with that at all last year...I thought maybe they had a bath or kitchen fan on and the 30 was struggling for air...told him to check to see what's running if it does it again.
Then it occurred to me...his glass is always black because they turn it down too far...so I called him back and said to give it more air the next time it does the back-puff thing...and then I got the rest of the story.
So he is semi retired, and since it's been cold out, he has been hanging around the house and burning the stove more. They also just got a new pup. The pup was chewing on some small splits and they decided to just throw the rest of the wood that was in the house in the stove, so puppers didn't choke on a splinter...BUT, the stove still had a large pile of coals in it...I think y'all see where this is going...

30 install, I know late to party, need to use both types adapters at top of stove to make everything work out correctly. This with Double wall Selkirk stuff from Menards stores. This gets all your crimped ends in the right sequence. Lovely little stickers with flow direction arrows on them adhered to each pipe section. Believe this would also resolve op's gap problem.

It's all standard 3" rigid and flex for the OAK. Also the same setup for our Pellet furnace downstairs.

I can snap a pic of the outside if needed?

I know there is one on my phone. But bedtime is approaching and we are trying to get my sons Eagle scout stuff in order.

And yes.. ! With 21 ft of vertical it still runs pretty hot. After several years we have learned that's the nature of the beast.

No low and slow unless it's a few splits.
