Never mind helping someone who is trying to learn.
To be honest, I rarely check the stove temp anymore.
Curious how long that load's been burning? I'd guess 1.5-2 hours?
You'll have a nice load of coals and the stove will be about 200, maybe less, depending on when you get up and how long that load is in the stove. That's what Swami (me) says.:)

I have to keep some primary flames going in front of the doghouse if I want it all to burn cleanly. If I don't, I often will wake up to charcoal and a black glass.

But I don't do huge loads often. A big load on coals in a hot stove can run well on secondary flames only. But I don't need that much heat often.

If you get a chance take a picture of the coals left this morning.... I’d be curious on what you find.

Do you have your nc30 on the main living floor or are you heating from the basement as well?

Chvymn99 , looks like you burn longer splits than I do. I'll get a bit of ash on that front lip sometimes, but not like your 2nd pic.
Marvin , I'll take a smallish split and lay it e/w on top of the "berm" of coals to burn 'em down (I'm not the only one) when they build up too much. Don't know if you knew about that little method, so thought I'd throw it out there.

18” to 20” but even then I keep my wood push up front. For me it burns better & more thoroughly.

 ... and it throws out quite a bit of heat doing that.

It seems I need to adjust my morning routine and give myself a bit more time to bring the stove up to temp. I just popped in to check the fire and it was smoldering :hair: I didn't have a lot of time this morning and must have shut it down too quick. STT was down to 292* after filling at 630 this morning (I have to leave for work no later than 710). Opened the air and it came back to life.

In general how long do you guys that are not living the retired life give yourself to fix the fire before work? I always worry I'm not getting the stove up to temp long enough before leaving for work :picard:

On a more positive note my glass seems as though it has been staying cleaner the last few days since I've been tinkering more. I feel as though I'm getting close to having this thing figured out. I just need some minor adjustments before I feel like I'm getting it dialed in.
