Nice to have that arrangement when it works, but all to often we hear of folks who have prepaid and the dealer goes out of business. Those pellets you thought were paid for and in his yard are no longer available. you are left with no option.
Best deal with buying pellets is cash and carry. COD This has happed to dealers who have been in business for a long time and are trusted members of the community. They just fall on hard times and you go down and out with them. I have seen it a few times around here with both pellets and oil.

Good advice. Thank you. Maybe I'll have to make room in my garage to store the extra tons there.

That would be a smart move. Larry is quite correct on that happening before. A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the dealers yard.

cant support this enough! what savemoney said is entirely accurate....if ya buy 4 tons, take them, or get them delivered ASAP. That way, you KNOW you are covered for winter. All too often, a well-meaning retailer will think that the deals he made with his supplier will be honored, only to find out 3 months later that that isn't the case....and sadly, you're committed, as you've paid for the product. Happened this past fall with a very large supplier. Basically, they came out at the height of the season telling many retailers that they simply would NOT be getting their product, already on order. This forced the consumer to get their money back and scramble.....not a good thing in fall/early winter. Also factor in that pellet plants burn/break down. Retailers, for various reasons, go out of business, etc.

Back in '09, I found a local lumberyard that was selling Barefoots. But they were on order, and I wouldn't be able to get them until the beginning of Oct. I gave a 50% deposit for 4 tons. They said they'd call when the pellets were in.

Well, the beginning of Oct. came & went......no call. I waited another week and then finally called them. I was told they were going out of business and no pellets were getting delivered. :bug:  I immediately drove over there and asked why I wasn't informed.......no one had an answer. I asked for my $$ back, and luckily I got it. Good thing I called when I did.....they shut the doors the next day!

And yes, I DID find other pellets.....hardwood Lignetics that actually were a little cheaper.

Are you keeping the wood stove as well?

A pellet stove heats slightly different than a wood stove, but it is very much the same. You are spot heating from a single room. The difference between the two is the wood stove reaches much higher temps and radiates a lot of heat and has a smaller blower (if any). Where a pellet stove has little radiant heat (some have good radiant heat, like the Harman P series) buy has a much larger convection blower. The larger blower has a faster recycle rate for the air in your home and has a better chance at setting up a good convective loop.

If you are going to run them in tandem? I doubt you will be disappointed. A pellet stove can make your life very easy.

I burn wood and pellets. If ever faced with a choice? I choose pellets everyday. No need for a 2 or 3 year supply of pellets, no bugs, bark, etc.. And most stoves can run almost a full day on a full hopper. They run just like your furnace. Shuts off when not needed. Starts when needed.. Or can go into a pilot burn to keep producing a small amount of heat until the need for more heat arises.

The wood stove is staying our family room. That is the only heat in there, and it's on the other end of the house from where the pellet stove will go. Hoping that between the two, we'll see both heats sort of converge in the middle. :).

Looks and function could have different meaning when choosing a stove. Buy something with both of you to be happy with but also keep in mind of function if needs arise. The Harman's you suggested are the looks and functions needed but if shove comes to push, maybe this is where a P61 or P68 would be a bonus. It has a lot to do on the square footage of the household and the area you live in. Food for thought, take it anyway you want it. Good luck on the shopping spree:smoke:

The p68 is a real heat gusher. It puts out a lot of both radiant and forced hot air. Not as pretty as some others, but a hot stove that is easy to clean and isn't fussy about what pellets are put in it.

I am on track to burn almost 5 ton this year but admit I use some oil when it gets really cold. But I am really considering dumping the lower grade pellets as when I burn the good stuff, I can keep the whole house (1600 sf cape) warm and the stove stays so much cleaner.

Heating from the basement with 1 large stove has worked to a point. A second smaller stove on the first floor and I would use zero oil for heat-no doubt about that. As others have mentioned, the P68 isnt pretty but its in the basement. If I put in a stove upstairs it would be a better looking ine that doesnt get overly hot to the touch....probably something like an XXV

average pellets versus very good pellets? The question is how much more would one pay for them? Its pretty subjective, as some folks must have to absolute cheapest pellet, doesn't make a difference to them. Other, yes, it does

I have cleaned my P68 and a friends XXV. In comparison, the P68 is soooo much easier and has a huge ash pan.
