 I would have expected no less from you Will. Keep 'em in the back of the truck ! :D

I have a space issue here also - too much junk.. I got to get my tired keister in gear and start hauling major quantities of failed small engine parts, car parts, and other assorted 'gems' out of the wood shed & down to the dump before more pellets get brought in.

With the recent fires here, I am also installing a camera (security) system to watch over things. I've been 'on the fence' w/ this for several weeks, but it's time to have a few additional 'eyes' on the property, in particular for Vulture watching. :vulture:
If nothing else, I'm looking forward to watching the black Bears play on the front lawn again this year. :ithappened:

No rest for the road warrior here, back on the road to pickup a load of College Stuff now, before the 'official' move-out tomorrow. I need Beer.. :picard:

Can you tell me what system you are investing in? I'm looking into getting one. I want mine to be wifi so I don't have to run cable, just don't know which one to get. Many of the WIFI reviews talk about those systems interfering with the same frequency as most internet wifi's run on.

That is why most WiFi routers allow one to change the channel each radio is operating on. The full color 720 HD units need about 1Mbps of bandwidth for their pictures. How far would these cameras be from any other router owned by other than yourself. The cameras also need power.

I have 1Mbps at close to 300 feet from my router (router isn't on full power) on the 2.4GHz band. I can see 4 other router radios in that band from upstairs. I moved my router radios to empty channels.

Sure thing Larry - it's an older Q-See system, a 720p / 1080p AHD (cabled) DVR I picked up off fleabay for 25 bucks - was password-locked, and needed a new CPU fan (the original one was screaming loud). Between the DVR, new CPU fan, and the (3) cameras currently: (2) 720p, (1) 1080p, I have about $225 invested in the setup.

More info on AHD technology, in case anyone's interested:
AHD technology: 720p/1080p quality via a coax at the distance of 500 m without any latency and losses

Plus side: digital transmission over Coax cable. Downside: Have to run cable. Video quality on the Q-See cameras is excellent. I'm running the conduit/cabling out to the wood shed this weekend / early next week.

For IP Cameras, I was considering this for the DVR unit:
    --
8CH NVR 1080P HD IP Network Home Security Camera cctv System support 3TB HDD

For cameras, I was ( am ) considering these:
    --
    http://www.amazon.com/Amcrest-IP2M-...r=1-2&keywords=amcrest+security+camera+system

    http://www.amazon.com/Amcrest-Outdo..._UL160_SR160,160_&refRID=0319JMH3J1ZPGVGJ44ZP

Smokey's got you covered on WiFi - if & when I consider adding remote location cameras here, it will be IP cameras, with a dedicated dual-band router, on an unused channel. (Just need to make sure that (120v) power is available to power the camera.)

    On the (wired) DVR here, 720p is 30 FPS @ ( 4096 k ) / 4 mBit bandwidth, 1080p is 15 FPS (6,144 k) / 6 mBit bandwidth on the primary recording channels. (That's at full-fidelity recording.)

    * The 15 FPS recording rate @ 1080p is a function of / limitation in the older DVR model purchased. Newer units w/ more advanced encoding chipsets can do full 30FPS at 1080p. (That's ok for me here.)

For the Amcrest IP cameras, the Dome camera is highly rated, accepts an SD card, and you can 'remote' in to view. (That will most likely be the one we go with.)

I hope the info helps.

Well, that's a lot of information. My old brain doesn't do much with it anymore. I am more of the type, "Buy this one". Plug it in and let it do its thing. What I do know is I have to watch out for conflicts with the internet wifi, that I want 1080 and I can run a plug to the camera, but no cables. I want one with fair night vision. Don't want to spend more than $400-$500. I keep doing reviews, but skeptical about them being written by paid writers. I want at least two cameras, and would like to be able to access it from my smart phone. this is my largest concern, "I consider adding remote location cameras here, it will be IP cameras, with a dedicated dual-band router, on an unused channel." My router says two, Netgear 42 and Netgear 42-5G Is that dual band?

I believe so, but will ask STB to help out with the question, please.

Sorry for the TMI Larry - * this * is the WiFi IP camera I liked, after researching here:

Amcrest IP2M-841 ProHD 1080P (1920TVL) WiFi IP Security Camera, Black

    http://www.amazon.com/Amcrest-IP2M-...r=1-2&keywords=amcrest+security+camera+system

Also comes in White, just choose the color that blends in best w/ your location setup. Don't forget to also purchase a 32GB microSD card.

Full disclaimer: I don't personally -own- this camera. A co-worker does though, and he can't say enough good things about it.

More (Too Much) Info: Most all DVR/IP cameras transmit images at a lower bandwidth than they are capable of recording when you are using a remote viewing app. - this is conserve network bandwidth. The local SD card (or DVR / NVR) -does- record the video image in full fidelity (e.g.: 720p / 1080p) resolution. * If full-fidelity viewing is important to you, then you will want to also use a DVR/NVR in conjunction with the camera, so you can store / view the video locally. In the IP camera space, many run Ethernet cable to their cameras to afford that capability.

The Ethernet cable can also supply power to the camera, this is called POE, or (P)ower (O)ver (E)thernet.

    * Not trying to confuse, just educate. For a starter camera, I'd go w/ the one I listed above.

That model looks to be for indoor viewing and has very limited night time viewing. However, I will look at the units made by the same company for outdoor viewing. Also would like the recording to go to a Large capacity DVR and record in loop over. Never is easy is it. I've been reviewing systems for 3 months. My budget and wifi wants are what limits me the most.

Rode the bike for the first time in 14 days coming in to work today. Last time I rode, it was to work also; - set off in the rain and 50*, got rained on going back home too while in the 60's. That day I left work about 1/2 hour early* to avoid the yellows that were showing on radar and headed my way.

This morning I set off in the mist and 41* . Hoping for a dry, and warmish ride home.

    * Early - I only put in 10 hours, at that job, that day - and no, I don't get overtime

Providing the unit is mounted in a weather-protected location (far enough under an eave), this unit will work excellent outdoors.

You can also mount the Dome camera in an external case, to further protect it from the elements, turn off the (internal) IR leds, and use external IR arrays for night vision lighting.

re: Limited night time viewing, that is true: many Dome camera units have less IR leds vs. Bullet cameras to keep the size small (especially on units w/ tilt-pan hardware), which = less night vision range.

Co-worker says he gets 50 ft. + night vision, which is very good for a camera this size.

    * If you want more IR range (better illumination), you can purchase and install one or more (separate) IR light arrays to light up the field of view.

"Also would like the recording to go to a Large capacity DVR and record in loop over."

This camera has "NVR" features built-in, that's why it is very popular. Your budget is restrictive, I would utilize what you have on-hand, e.g.: if your Router allows you to attach an external Hard Drive, do it, setup up FTP services in the Router, and instruct the camera to auto-upload video footage every (n) hours to the external HD for record keeping.

Also consider upgrading the microSD card to 64GB and use a 3rd-party software to format to FAT, to double available internal recording space, see the Q/A section in the product link.

re: Budget, that's why I went the route I did here, $$$. Since you have been investigating for 3+ mos. you know the cost of a retail "turn key" system.

Reason I recommended the Amcrest camera is -support- : they have excellent customer support, you speak w/ a person in the US, and they are fully versed on the product, they are not reading off a 'cue card' in some off-shore call center. That's huge.

re: 1080p vs. 720p - unless you are mounting a 1080p up high (2nd story) and are pointing down for arial overview, you sacrifice a lot of "view area", due to vertical height. The 720p cameras here are actually better suited for ground-level recording. I plan on installing the 1080p camera, with a separate IR array, on the 2nd story back corner of the house to overlook the back yard & garden areas.

Yes, I would suggest contacting the folks @ Amcrest to see if they have a solution that fits your budget.
