Did you happen to look out behind the store? Tons and tons of them piled high out behind the store. All seems to be Chow.

Since we're talking cars/tires, thought I'd add this......I've had 4 different tire brands on my Trailblazer since new in '02, but these are the best I've had. They went through our terrible winter last year w/o a problem. The mechanic at the shop I use occasionally loves them too. About $150 for my size (245/65-17) at Discount Tire online.

the unis have a 55k treadlife warranty.
with the amount we drive, i may have to eventually replace them purely due to age.

When the snow burm was several feet high, I even needed 4-lo with the 4-runner - going uphill and plenty of snow behind the burm in my driveway. But the road was narrow and I couldn't leave it out in the road while shoveling the burm or it would get run over by the town plow truck.

The only time I needed 4-lo (which it doesn't have) for the Patriot was after it had snowed about 18". I was going across a huge unplowed parking lot and she went good - until I stupidly let my foot off the gas. I had to trudge back to the building and get some help to push her out. But, I never even attempted to get in the uphill driveway when the burm was as high as the car as I could usually get it in my neighbor's driveway (he would come home during lunch and plow his house out).

Now I live in a flatter area, and a 2-car wide street, so leaving a vehicle in the road while clearing the burm is no big deal. The burm at the end of my driveway is regularly taller than my snow blower because it is at the end of the "T" of another street and that is the way the snow is plowed (oh, and there is a hydrant across the road to, so they aren't likely to change their pattern).

Another thing I wonder about is having an automatic transmission while in 4WD. I have never had anything but manual so could use engine braking going downhill. Guess I'll find out how good the 2&3 gears are for doing that with the Explorer.

bogieb Just in case you didn't know, many automatic transmissions (including my '02 TrailBlazer, your '04 Explorer, & others) can start in 2nd gear....very handy in s**w conditions. Just pull gear selector into "2" while stopped.....won't accelerate as fast, but reduces wheel spin.

Engine off, put in 2nd gear, start engine. How is this different than going to 2nd gear while driving?

No, not with engine off. What I was trying to say is that while vehicle is stopped (engine running), if you put the drive selector in "2", you can still accelerate. Not all automatic trans allow this, AFAIK.

If you were driving along and put the selector into "2" to help slow down, you could also leave it there to accelerate from a stop. It will help stop from spinning the wheels in slippery conditions as might happen if you left it in "D" and the transmission would start in 1st gear.

Great light truck tire. Good highway ride and good in the snow-plus I get about 75K miles out of them. Factor all of that into about 225 bucks per tire installed and 4 wheel alignment and its  in my book
