I just got a deal from Feilding Oil and Propane. $1.79 for the first fill, then $2.06. subject to change. Long term contract available. Won't sell tanks.
In the long run, I would have been better sticking with my oil system, however I could not because I need the space for a new bathroom. Just contracted with Culligan for a water treatment system to pull up the PH to 7. Another $1200. I am having much of the copper pipes removed and Pec's installed. Also a lot of valves to isolate the different areas.

Larry. I had porcelain over cement slab in part of my previous home. They were freezing all the time. And my personal bias, I do not like grout lines. They get dirty, and the vacuum/electric mop can't get good suction.

We have redone over 1/2 the plumbing here, and used mostly pex, neat stuff.

Hey guys, I had a thread somewhere here about my husbands new office, the building is on a 6' concrete slab (old ice house), and another thread here where guys were mentioning cement slabs acting as heat sinks. *If* savemoney is on concrete slab, I know the Mrs likes a warm house like I do, what considerations for his floor coverings?

That is a very good price for LP. We have one local supplier so it's sort of what they want to charge. We filled our 100 Gallon tank 2 weeks ago and it was $1.83 a Gal. The eia shows the average for March in this area is $1.58 however by the time our supplier gets a delivery charge, hazmat charge, extra because we are under the 100 gal bottom limit etc it adds up.
If it was in the Dollar a Gallon range I would be getting a bigger tank using the gas furnace a bit.

Larry, glad to hear everything is coming together for you. After seeing all the different fees the propane suppliers charge, I plan on sticking with oil when I replace my furnace in 2 years.

You can't go wrong with that, but please look at the mini split heat pumps. Cooling and heating was never any cheaper except for those who cut their own wood. The problem is they don't work after -13 F so you need something else. I know you have done your homework. That new system you are looking at should save you a lot. The efficiencies of these new units is amazing, just as the new wood stove are. They can squeeze out more BTU instead of sending them up the chimney. My new gas furnace is vented by a PVC pipe and uses one with outside air for combustion. It also uses stainless steel so it isn't eaten up by acid as earlier units have been. The fuel tanks will be outside on the end of the house with no windows and is heavily covered in overgrown shrubs.

our floors, while cool, are not cold, but what we do is have area carpets like one in the center of the room and scatter rugs at our feet by our recliners. They clean up easily and can be replace with very little effort. We have used that area for several winters. Mostly with wall to wall carpet, but it always would begin to have an odor in the summer. So out with them! That pellets stove keeps the area about 78-82 most of the time so the floors are only really cool near the perimeter.
We don't have our usually seating area on any outside walls. My wife's chair is about 6 ft from the stove.

My middle son is a builder and he's pushing heat pumps, but I'm skeptical. It doesn't make sense to me to buy a heating system that won't heat when it's cold out. An oil furnace will. I know an appliance dealer that sells them and has 5 in his house (large house), and he needs to supplement when it's real cold. So it makes more sense to me to burn oil.

I was too until I watched an ask this old house episode. Seems some of the newer units work all the way down to the -30°s.

From the link I found this. They also installed one on a show(can't find the link though).

I'll keep diggin to see if I can find a link to the video where they installed it!!

Edit: See link for more info.

I wonder how much electricity is required? Maine has some of the highest electrical rates in the country. Bottom line is, I'm a stubborn old bast@rd and don't want to get myself into a situation where I can't heat the house with the heat source I've installed. I'm not going to be able to haul pellets forever.

At Maine rates, it is comparable to oil at $1.50 a gallon. All this information is available on efficiency maine's Web site.

Wow!! You must have some cheap electricity!
Edit: Never mind, forgot you were talking about heat pumps.:emb:
If I could get propane for 1.29 my pellet stove would be very lonely.
