This place has a weird layout. Hard to get the heat to move liked the old raised ranch. But I have to make it better or the :heidi: gonna happen!

At least the chitter is warm. :D

Foamed all the air gaps I could. But the old sheeting has mile wide gaps. Only real warm spot is in the kitchen where I pulled of the siding to replace a winder and rewrapped with a modern reflective barrier house wrap. That old tar paper wrap aint cutting it as far as air infiltration goes.

Some day I'll pull off the aluminum siding and rewrap it. Probably when I change out the windows.

There is only one thing worse than a cold tirlet seat in the morning and that is a wet, cold tirlet seat. Of course that isn't an issue around here as I have my very own private tirlet and no kids that forget to lift the lid....lol

Jay, is your stove in the basement? If so can you move it up to the main floor and shut the basement door? You could keep the cold downstairs and also benefit from radiant heat from the stove.

    :hair:

This home was a wind tunnel when we bought it, literally snow dust would blow in by the floor board trim with high winds o_O. Tirlet seat was so cold it stung my buttocks to sit on. OMG, I still have peeing troubles, also when high winds suck water up the tirlet vent pipe, I just can't get over the sound of sloshing water under my behind. We did a remodel and it's much warmer in here but he toilet sloshing and pee hesitation remains.

Wish my house had house wrap. That would make things a lot different on windy days.

So this is what the walls along the perimeter of the house looked like when I tore out all the sheet rock and old insulation (that was only about 1" thick). Yes, those are 9-11" gaps between the top of the plywood to the the ceiling framing. There is no house wrap and there was no plastic or any kind of moisture/air barrier. The ceiling is tile instead of sheet rock, so there was no tape/mud at the corner to help reduce air infiltration. They just covered the sheet rock / ceiling tile gap with crown moulding (did not use any adhesive or sealant) and called it good.

    DR Wall STripped.jpg

I custom cut plywood for each gap and then sealed the gaps from there. (and I had someone replace all the windows)
    Plywood on DR Wall.jpg

Put in R13 insulation (only 2x4 studs so couldn't go with R19), plastic and 1/2" sheet rock (what I tore out was 1/4").

The kitchen is still like the first picture (except I haven't torn out the walls so there is still a little bit of insulation and 1/4" sheet rock). But until I'm ready to commit a whole bunch of money to replace everything in the kitchen, that is the way it will stay.

    IT IS SHELL RUN TIME

With this very very late summer like weather coming to a close tomorrow and the onset of the fall rains.....It was time to stock up the shells

We loaded up the outfit and headed out yesterday morning early and got serious into unloading about 10:30 am
We had the first can unloaded by a touch after 1 pm....Decided to make a second haul and were home by about 3 pm

Finished putting away the first load and then decided to wait until today to unload the second haul....
This fills everything up chuck azz full......No more room.....AT ALL.....

We are ready to take on the winter......

With October being more like late August or early September we have only had a very few small fires...We should normally start small fires by mid September and be well into the Fall shoulder season by now....

This warm early fall has saved us a fair bit of fuel....

My wife prefers it to be in the basement. Its so big and ugly. :picard: We have plans to add something in the front foyer. Maybe one of those pretty stoves??

I installed the duct work to the beast yesterday and its much better. Heat is mostly going upstairs and the radiant is keeping the basement toasty!! May need to add some duct insulation or a booster fan to our bedroom. Low 30's last night and the house was 68ºF when I got up. Our bedroom and the front bedroom were cooler at 66ºF.

    TMI!! :p

On the hill we live on it always seems to be windy. If they call for 20 mph, We get that plus. If they call for a breeze, We get 20+ mph. :headbang:

Most old homes only have thin tar paper and the joints aren't sealed. The new fangled stuff makes a big difference. Our kitchen was 1960's era, We demo'd it and I chnged out the 1939 era window. Plus resheeted the exterior in the worst spots to replace the slab wood they had built it with. Area's of the slab wood had 1" plus gaps. Absolutely no insulation at all!. I put up 2 layers of 1/2 plywood(stagger joints) on the exterior and tapped all the joints. Put up a radiant/themal barrior house wrap and tapped all the joints. Wrapped it around the window openings and sealed the window as well. Also put 1" board insulation over the house wrap.

Second pic is the trial window fit before the house wrap was applied. I didn't take a pic of that. I was soo bonkers to get this place rady to move in to. But it was way better sealed up from the old!! I also foamed any remaining gaps too!

Then R15(max for a 2x4 wall I could find) in the wall cavities. Plus a radiant/moister barrier over the insulation. I wished I took more pic's, But its the warmest room in the shack besides the chitter!! All the exterior walls in the shack got R15 rockwool/stonewool insulation and the interior radiant/moister barrier over the insulation.

There is actually. They (don't know who exactly) make a heated tirlet seat for those who sit to wee wee. Being male, I don't but my wife does for sure.

You ca now purchase aftermarket tirlet seats that are not only heated but give you a lower chassis wash after every use....lol

If we had a basement (we don't other than a Michigan low ceiling one that is really a root cellar), I'd be living there as well. I'm not large but I am ugly.

Not toasty outside here today, 34 presently. 71 inside. Stove has been running for 3 consecutive days, but that should change tomorrow as it's supposed to warm up a lot. Like into the 60's so I can shut it off during the day (and clean it). Just pellets presently, no corn. Corn is for when it gets really cold. Sure it will. Corn has it's own issues that pellets don't as in lots of ash to clean out.
