Such sad news. He was a great example of what a good man should be. My thoughts are with his family.

A friend of mine called and asked if I knew anything about gas fireplaces. They are like any other gas appliances. Pilot light, thermocouple, thermopile, control valve, burner and thermostat. His problem was the pilot wouldn't stay lit. I went over and looked at the pilot. It looked good but I pulled it and cleaned it. I cleaned the thermocouple and thermopile and adjusted the pilot flame a bit higher. It seemed to work well for a day or so then went out again. As an experiment I left the glass and fake logs off and let the pilot run to see if the draft was blowing it out. A day later it went out. Ok, that leaves the thermocouple. It's a Robertshaw fast acting one. I went over today to pull the thermocouple and run to FW Webb to match up another. Well for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to remove it from the fireplace. It disconnected easily from the pilot plate and the control valve but the tube runs through a small hole in the floor of the fireplace. There has to be a way to get it out because they certainly didn't manufacture the thermocouple in the fireplace! I guess I will take the burner plate and floor out and see. I did cut the thermocouple so I could at least get one.
This was going to be a 10 minute job. Sheesh.
Oh the fireplace is a Fireplace Xtrordinair 36 DV EX

I've been a mechanic and later a power plant operator my whole life and you would think I would have learned that by now!

Got a notice from Toyota in the mail yesterday about fires caused by using smaller sized batteries that move and cause shorts in 2013-2018 Rav4.

This envelope had 5 legal paper sized pages of reasons why you need to use the Group 35 battery (English on one side, Spanish on the other) and (this seemed so ridiculous to me anyway) 2 more legal paper sized pages of step-by-step instructions on how to open and prop the hood, locate the battery hold down bracket , clean off bracket, apply the included sticker to the bracket then how to close the hood.
On the top of the first page was this-- "If you do not feel comfortable installing this LABEL yourself, any authorized Toyota dealer can install it for you free of charge".
I guess I have severely underestimated the number of people in America who don't know how to open their own car hoods.

I had a hard time when I went to put it on Lori's Rav4 cause the instructions didn't say I was supposed to open the driver's side door first to get at the hood release. Had me stumped for a while, kept jamming my fingers into the door. Stupid Toyota.
