Same with my driveway. I am also afraid if I cut the roots that are under the hot top, the tree they are feeding would die. My guess is one of the roots is 6 inches in diameter. Eventually I will have to deal with it as the tree matures. Like you said...money!

This is why I officially left the "GCOMC".....no real winter worries except the occasional cold night, or a little bit of sn*w that is gone by the next day:

First off... I am not an arborist.
But I have always thought that the root you see, corresponds to a branch/limb.
So it may kill a branch/limb of equal size, I do not think it will kill the tree..
Every limb or branch, has a corresponding root.
Anyone... Please feel free to correct...

I only have 2 prerequisites for this time of year... One is plenty of fuel for the stove and two is plenty of food for my tummy. Everything else is inconsequential.

Speaking of food, my wife just picked up 2 3 blade standing rib roasts for 8 bucks a pound today at the local meat market up town. If they have any more tomorrow, think I'll pick up a couple more. I never tire of standing rib roasts with plenty of garlic on them. Even better cold as sandwiches on fresh rye bread.

In case I forget later, everyone have a safe and merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Amy and I will be spending the holidays here at home on the farm with our cats and our wonderful pup.

Anytime you want to come down to check it out, a bed is available, and beer in the fridge.

Best move I've made. People are super friendly, gas is $2.70/gal today, and the only winter things I brought when I moved here were a small hand windshield scraper, 1 sn*w shovel, and a couple plastic jugs of ice melt.....none of which I have used in 2 1/2 winters.

Now, those things being said, I'm sure I've jinx'ed myself. :headbang:

Get off my Lawn! I mean my frozen dirt. Is my mood here now. Jealous of your weather, I left similar nice weather and miss it terribly.

No frozen dirt here, just semi frozen mud. Looks dry and nice until you drive over it and then you sink in and get it all over your clean car. Walking out to the mailbox is the same scenario.

Wife and I would love to move south but ain't gonna happen. We own way too much farm ground and woods here to go anywhere. Problem is, my woods is 250 miles from here. if it was here, I'd be heating with a wood stove and not a pellet-corn burner and I'm not about to move to where the woods is, even more snow and cold weather there than here. Candidly, I really dislike winter even though it gives the land a rest so it can produce bountiful crops next year (with a little help from me in the form of 46% urea and various herbicides and pesticides)..... Sometimes you need to read the fine print......

Talked with my brother last night who went to a butcher shop advertising a rib roast on sale-they had none and said they are taking orders but may not have it...why advertise it then?

They did have prime rib roast at $39.00 per lb :jaw:
They also had sirloin roast at 8.99 lb. He went with that one

The day I give 39 bucks a pound for a standing rib roast is the day I become a Vegan.
Went this morning and grabbed a 6 blade whopper. Just sawed it into 3 2 blade roasts.

Not like I need more meat in the freezer as I had already bought a side of beef. We have 2 large chest freezers and are full now. One is 100% meat. The other is full of things like stuffed green peppers, sweet corn from the garden, shucked and in many bags, green beans, brussels sprouts and around 15 gallons of apple cider from the apple trees on the property. I have a cider press and press my own mash. We both like to eat, obviously. Gave a lot of cider away this fall, bountiful crop of apples. Down in the root cellar is carrots layered in baskets full of sand and pickled beets and canned spag sauce as well as about 300 pounds of potatoes and 50 pounds of yams plus about 100 pounds of onions and jars of sauerkraut. My wife loves to can and I help her. Been fermenting my own sauerkraut for years now. Quit growing cabbage. Have a big produce farmer down the road and we trade pickled beets for cabbage. I ususally get a hamper full of green and red cabbage. A hamper is 50 pounds of heads. Don't grow green peppers either he lets me go out in his fields and pick what I want. Last year he grew acres of cantaloupes and we ate them until they were coming out our ears...

Pretty cold and windy here today but the sun is out. I'm running the stove in notch 6, which is kind of unusual for me but the cold wind is out of the north west and it's really cooling the west side of the house off and both the central furnace and the stove thermostats are in the kitchen which is at the west side of the shack so to keep the propane guzzler from guzzling propane, I cranked the stove up a bit. Central furnace is set at 68 and the bio mass stove is set at 70 and yes, I'm consuming spring water in the humidifier at a pretty good clip too. Thermometer shows 27 outside but I bet the wind chill is in the teens.

I know the pup went out this morning and did his business in the front yard and wanted back in pretty quick like and his tailor provided him with a nice thick overcoat that will be deposited all over the house, come spring. he's an Australian Shepherd btw. Great dogs to own or should I say he owns us. 8 years old and still acts like a puppy. Sleeps with us in the bedroom on his own bed, but come 8AM if we aren't up, he's on the bed between us telling us it's time for him to goo out and wee wee.
