Yesterday morning I was out on the back porch and I heard a crack back in the "woods" at the property behind me. Saw some leaves fall, but nothing else. It wasn't a loud crack so just figured it was a small branch off one of the dead trees. There hasn't been any lightning or wind, so didn't think much about it. At 1:30 that afternoon I went out the back and something didn't look right in the trees - wow, a tree is horizontal. Well, not the whole tree, 15-20' of the trunk is still standing.

Saw the neighbor cattycorner (to right of picture) abut the tree because it is over near their property line and sometimes they walk their dog just a bit over the property line. The actual property the tree is on is for the parking lot of an apartment building to the left of the picture. Didn't see anyone out and about, so mentally filed it away to let someone know to get ahold of the landlord.

Went out about 2:30 (every hour I try to walk around the outside of the house to get my blood flowing again from sitting in my office chair), and it was great timing. The landlord was just parking his truck so I yelled over to him about the tree. He thought it had come down during the storm last week (the tornado warning that really turned into not even a storm) until I let him know it had just come down earlier that day.

At almost 5 pm, I went out again and saw the top had found the ground. I originally thought one of the dead trees had come down, but this was a live maple that seemed to be fairly healthy, judging by the top. It's a little safer anyway with the top down.

That is the second tree in my neighborhood to go down for no apparent reason in a couple of weeks. Must be the dry conditions are weakening the trees. No rain for 4-6 weeks, 4" of rain in 3 days, then another 5 weeks of 1/4"rain per week just isn't helping them.

X2 I was thinking the same thing. Can’t be too difficult to get him a tablet or a laptop so he can get on the forum for a couple minutes each day to read and post the latest news.

He has his tablet. His problem is the tablet doesn't respond to his finger touch. WW is sending him a stylist which is what he said he needs. Once he gets in with the stylist, he can adjust the sensitivity of the touch.

All is well here in the beautiful Piedmont of NC. Yes, the quake did wake me up, but other than some shake, nothing else happened here. No so good for the people in Sparta, NC where it was centered.....a lot of older stone foundation houses cracked in half, un-fixable.
