Today it was pick up the parts for the busted snow blower and do a junk store run. The boss got a pile of books and I picked up some DVDs which are already being served by one of my DLNA servers. Nothing like a Care Bear marathon:whistle:.

That is why I got the DVDs, and now they are on my computer and headed for a USB thumb drive on my router en-route to the smart tv.

I can have my router act as a media server so after a bit of work I'll have all of my media available to my computer, the tv, the bosses computer, and her smartphone.

I've been working on this project quite a bit over the last year. It was one of the reasons I got a nice fast system.

"Walleye, homemade fries and a beer", oh man I haven't had that combo for a long time. When I was at a radar site in Minnesota, guys would dip for smelt. Whole smelt with a beer batter were deep fried. It was a favorite at the officer's and enlisted club. I've seen men eat heaping plates full.

:drool:Yessir, smelt season is just getting started here. And heaping plates are the norm... wash it all down with a frosty mug of your favorite brew! Don't get no better.

    Hey Smokey

This is something that I have been thinking of trying. Is a DLNA server different from HTPC? If so what are the differences and how do you start something like this? I would be interested in it for video as well as high resolution audio.

Somewhat and then again not too much. Depends upon what your server does or can do and what the device on the other ends does or can do.

I've got a collection of servers and am wondering when the the other end will get a clue about a decent client interface such as VLC.

I'm getting sick of having to play in flight transcoder (mediatomb) or converter hell ReadyDLNA to the smart tv works fine when I use MP3 and such not so well for OGG and a few others. The Smartshare works great and it doesn't stumble when fed a native Linux partion unlike the DLNA server on the same router.

My smart tv has no trouble with the native Linux partions the same USB stick works on the tv and Readyshare but not on ReadyDLNA.

I want to be able to plug a drive into my router and let it serve content.

I also have Kodi on my computer that as of now doesn't have transcode ability.

I could plug a few other things in to my computer and the computer into my TV and Then I'd be more like your HTPC system. I don't really want to run the computer to view the content.

Kids are helping us deal with a huge excess of stuff. Hoping to have the first part of that phase done by next week. They are boxing things up and putting them upstairs in the garage to be sorted out later. Some of the furnishings will stay where they are. I don't know how we accumulated so much "stuff". Nice to see these rooms again look like they were intended to be. Not just overflow storage areas. My son came across a nice winter coat that still had the tags on it. It fits him, but not me now. Lots of thining to do with the clothes.
